In Loving Memory Of

Daniel William Shannon

With heavy hearts, we announce that Daniel William Shannon (Danny, Papa) passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at the age of 87 years. Fortunately, he went peacefully and was surrounded by those he shared his laughter, love, and life with.

Danny was born September 9, 1929 in Sexsmith AB, to William and Pearl Shannon. He was the third eldest in a family of five siblings, including two older brothers and two younger sisters. Danny attended school in Sexsmith, and although he was perhaps not the sharpest tool in the shed, it did ignite the beginning of what would be the rest of his captivating and beautiful life.

It was in the 9th grade that Danny met the love of his life, Shirley McQuitty. They were instant friends. Over time their relationship took on a romantic nature creating a strong bond that cemented them together over the years. After school, Danny went on to work in the family Farm Equipment Business, as well as farming for many years. He developed a strong work ethic early in life, despite previous hardships, which led to many successes in both his business and community. He was known to go the extra mile for his customers, many of which quickly became lifelong friends.

At the age of 18, he was selected to tour the US as part of an exchange student program under the Air Cadets. This not only sparked a newfound love of travel, but also a deep desire to experience and learn about the world. From then on, travel continued to be a big part Danny’s life, as he and his wife spent much of their married lives spanning the globe.

Following his retirement, Danny and Shirley spent 15 years living life as snowbirds escaping to Arizona during the cold winter months. He became known as the Cinnamon Bun King far and wide, delivering his baking to all (whether they wanted it or not).

Danny was known for his sense of humor, quick wit, and storytelling flair. He was very active in numerous community events, social gatherings, and family affairs. Whatever was going on, Danny was there! The phrase “work hard, play hard” definitely embodied Danny’s approach to life. He was a very driven man always working to better himself, his family, and the community of Sexsmith and neighboring towns.

He was born a true giver, always believing that it is better to give than to receive. Danny maintained a strong sense of devotion to his Catholic faith which primed him to have such a uniquely generous and affectionate heart. He lived life to the fullest, as he knew how important it was to appreciate everything that life had to give you.

Danny and Shirley Shannon were married in 1950 and were blessed with 66 years of marriage during their 73 year long journey together. The exceptional bond they shared was the foundation for the deep love they felt for each other as well as their children: Terri Lynn, James “Jim” Robert, Cindy Lou, and Lori Ann. Family became the most important aspect of Danny’s life which expanded to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and numerous friends.

Danny is survived by his “Sweetheart” Shirley.

Daughter Terri Lynn (Lloyd) Ireland; grandson Brad (Cecille) Ireland and great-grandchildren Lauryn and Kingston; grandson Riley Ireland (Shannon Batyski) and great-grandchildren Zachary, Alicia, and Faith.

Son Jim (Karen) Shannon; grandson Josh (Chantelle) and great-grandchild Brodi.

He is also survived by his sister Mary McDonald, sisters in-law: Kay Shannon, Dorothy Arac, Jeannette Bickell, and Shirley McQuitty; brothers in-law Harold Steinke and Bob Bickell.

Danny was predeceased by his parents William and Pearl; mother and father in-law Hiram and Jennie McQuitty; brothers Joe and Jim; sister Peggy Gullion; brothers in-law: Randy McDonald, Stan McQuitty, Jim Fletcher, and Danny Arac; sister in-law Marian Steinke; and great-granddaughter Abby Koll.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. ViNash, Dr. Quinn, Dr. R. Martin, Dr. Renfree, Dr. Bertozzi, Dr. Beuker, and all the nursing staff on 3 North, 4 North, and 5 North of the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie. Their dedication and efforts to provide quality care over the last several months were a heartwarming blessing to the entire family.

We thank God for the gift of Danny’s life and feel blessed to have been touched by a soul as special as his. We love you Papa, you are missed and cherished every day.
