In Loving Memory Of

Nancy Evans

Nancy Ann Evans (nee Schulz), resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Crooked Creek, AB, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at the Grande Prairie Care Center, at the age of 46 years.

Nancy was born in Grande Prairie and raised on a dairy farm in Crooked Creek with her 2 brothers (Norman and Neal) and 2 sisters (Natalie and Naomi). She attended Ridgevalley School for all 12 years of school, where she thrived as a student and with her friends. She loved to help out in the library, the office, and eventually ran the school canteen. Volunteering at the church and being involved in youth group were also important to Nancy.

Upon graduation from High School, Nancy went to Peace River Bible Institute and made many incredible friends as she obtained a Certificate of Christian Studies. During this time, Nancy injured her knee quite severely while playing basketball, which required surgery to repair. This was not the first time she went through difficulties with her legs as she was burned very badly as a child, and then had a bone lesion removed which initially was thought to be cancer, but was benign in the end. Nancy was so strong and courageous as each time she quietly battled her way back to health. During Bible School, she even completed her tour with the Chorale with her cane and assistance from fellow team members.

Following Bible College, Nancy moved to Grande Prairie and worked as a housekeeper at the local hospital, bringing joy to everyone along the way with her big smile and kindness. Volunteering at the Church of Christ led to Nancy’s employment as the Children’s minister. Many lives were touched as she built an excellent place where children would feel loved and could encounter Jesus. Sunday morning services, camps, VBS, and special programs with the kids were all part of what Nancy excelled at. Young Adult ministry, university, baseball, curling, and more helped fill Nancy’s free time. During this time, three little children (Ari, Keano, and Typanga) touched Nancy’s heart, along with their dad, and that is when Willie Evans entered the picture. Throughout it all, Nancy worked her way through the Collaborative Program at GPRC to graduate with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta.

Nancy and Willie married and became a family October 17, 1998. Trisitin soon joined them and Faith and Nevaeh completed Nancy and Willie’s family in 2004 and 2005. They have brought so much joy. As they have grown, they have excelled in many sports and activities, and Nancy could be found cheering on the sidelines; a very proud mama! These have been busy years as Nancy has worked full time at St. Kateri, primarily as the music teacher, and yet found time to be present to watch all her kids in whatever activities they were involved in, sometimes marking papers while cheering. Fond memories were made as the kids helped her set up and take down her classroom each year. Perhaps this is why they all seem to want to follow in Nancy’s steps to be teachers. She was so proud of them all and was a great mom, wife, daughter, sister, auntie, and friend!

Nancy was talented musically, especially with her voice and playing the flute, although she also played the piano and other instruments. Everything she worked at, Nancy gave her all to make it the best she could. Her students at St. Kateri loved her and gave right back to create beautiful musical dramas that touched many lives. One of their last performances was an Easter Cantata they blessed the residents of several local homes with, including the Grande Prairie Care Center where Nancy’s mom was living at the time. Celebrations at school and Mass were made special largely because of Nancy and her students’ dedication and hard work along with an amazing support team.

Nancy had many accomplishments in her life here on earth, but her faith in God, was most important to her.  Through good and also difficult times, Nancy relied on God to see her through. Her most recent struggle with ALS was the hardest of them all as she had to leave Willie and her children much too soon. Nancy has joined her parents (Erich and Lillian) in glory while her siblings, along with their families, miss her terribly as do all her nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephew, and numerous other family and friends.

Nancy’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at 11:00am at the Church of Christ Highland Park in Grande Prairie (9602 92 Ave.).

Memorial donations may be made to a trust fund for Nancy’s children. Donations payble to: Bonnie Larkin in Trust. Memo: Nancy Evans Trust Fund.
