In Loving Memory Of

Shirley Joan Chalmers

August 25, 1934 - April 21, 2012

Shirley Joan Chalmers (Nee Braybook) was born August 25, 1934 in Hargrave, MB, and passed away in Grande Prairie on April 21, 2012 surrounded by her loving family after a brave and brief battle with cancer. Joan grew up in Hargrave and worked for the Manitoba Government. She met and married the love of her life, Bill, in Virden, Manitoba. In 1955, they left Virden to begin their new life together in Alberta. Together with the Chalmers family, they moved “Chalmers and Sons Trucking” back to Alberta. In the early 1960’s, they sold the trucking company and shortly thereafter, Mom and Dad started Culligan Soft Water & Beatty Pumps & Pressure Systems, Big Daddy’s Vending, Smokey News Stand, Howard TV’s, and numerous other business endeavors. They were a TEAM in every sense of the word. Joan was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2003, her infant daughter Bobby Joe in 1971, her mother Violet Braybrook in 1943, father William in 1963, brother Fred in WWII in 1944, sister Bea and Bill Tough, brother Jack in 2003, brother Don in 2012, mother in-law Bessie Chalmers in 1999, father in-law Gordon Chalmers in 1973, Harley Chalmers, Rebecca and Al Schmidt, and Larry Morin. She is survived and celebrated by her 4 children: Debbie (Fred) Bushaw of Kelowna, Trudy (Ken) Oates of Airdrie, Kelly (Selene) Chalmers of Grande Prairie, David (Norma) Chalmers of Saskatoon; grandchildren: Greg (Virginia) Wornstaff, Brad (Jennifer) Wornstaff, Terri (Josh) Briscoe, Tina (Ritchie) Martin, Courtney, Paige, Ty and Georgia Chalmers, Evan, Jenna, and Cameron Chalmers, Jordanna Nellis, and Derek Bushaw; great-grandchildren: Kiran, Simran, and Jeevan Martin, Hunter and Anyssa Briscoe, and Ryder Nellis; sister in-law Elaine (Bob) Osborne of Fairview, sister in-law Doreen Chalmers of Kelowna, and longtime friend Judy Martin of Grande Prairie. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 2:00pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grande Prairie, with Pastor Dave Friesen officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alberta Lung Association. Special thanks to the QEII Medical staff and the nurses on 5 North for the exceptional care given to our mother during this difficult time.
