In Loving Memory Of

Elizabeth "Betty" Hope White

September 23, 1916 - June 23, 2012

Betty Bodeker was born at Hudson Hope, BC, September 23, 1916. She was the only daughter of Ben and Lutie Bodeker. Her father was a surveyor and riverman. In 1917 he joined the Hudson Bay Company, and his first posting was at Dunvegan. He was in charge of that post when it closed in May 1918. He was then transferred to the HBC post at Spirit River, and then on to Sturgeon Lake HBC post in 1922. This is where Betty and her brothers, Graham and Gordon attended school at the mission as day students. Her Dad left the HBC in the early 1930's and took up farming near Valleyview. Betty remained in the Valleyview area until November, 1939. She then married Fred White from Spirit River and moved to their farm at Broncho Creek. There they raised their children, Kelly, Ruth and Ben. As the children grew, and became more independent, Betty started finding time to enjoy more activities outside the home. She was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge. There was also the Broncho Creek Ladies Club where the neighbor ladies met at each other’s homes for fellowship and tea parties several times a year. Mom then started curling and golfing. In the summertime, Dad and Mom would load up their trailer and be off to weekend golf tournaments around the Peace River Country. So many good times were had with the friends that they met, and many trophies were brought home. In 1972, Dad and Mom decided to go to Vancouver Island for the winter. They packed up their van in October when the harvest was finished, and returned to the farm in April, in time to get the crop seeded. They found that they enjoyed this lifestyle and continued to do this for the next 20 years. They joined the senior curling in Nanaimo and made wonderful friendships. Dad's health started to fail him, and they were no longer able to continue those winter trips. On September 12, 1995, Dad passed away suddenly. Mom continued living at the farm until 2000 when her vision started to fail and she could no longer drive. She moved into the senior apartments in Spirit River. There she enjoyed the friendship of many old friends. Mom had a wonderful sense of humor and was fun to be around. As Mom's health made it impossible to continue living independently, she moved to the Pioneer Lodge in Grande Prairie, and then to Mackenzie Place, Spirit River LTC and back to Mackenzie Place. November 2011 Mom was moved into Points West where she resided until her passing June 23, 2012 at age 95yrs and 9months. She had a life well lived. She was predeceased by her parents Ben and Lutie Bodeker . Her brothers Graham and Gordon Bodeker; her sister in-law Eunice Bodeker and her husband Fred White. She will be missed and fondly remembered by her children; Kelly [Betty]; Ruth [Nick,] Markovich; Ben [Jan] White. Grandchildren: Wanda [Ed] Zaichkowsky, Bruce [Kim] White], Lisa [Mark] McCaffrey, Brian [Amanda Mastervick] Markovich, Jordan [Clayton] Pomeroy, Erin [Brad] Wold; 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful loving and caring Mom and Grandma, who has left us with many good memories. Rest in peace Mom! A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at 1:00pm at the Spirit of Peace United Church in Spirit River. Interment will follow at the Spirit River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
