In Loving Memory Of

Lynette Orilee Bowers

February 10, 1946 - July 9, 2012

Lynette Bowers, longtime resident of Grande Prairie, passed away on Monday, July 9, 2012 at the age of 66 years. Lynette (1946) was born and raised in St. Kitts, British Virgin Islands. Lynette attended and graduated nursing school in New York. Lynette lived and worked in Red Deer prior to moving to Grande Prairie. Lynette worked in the nursing profession when she came to Grande Prairie in 1977. However, when she was faced with the dilemma of caring for 3 young children and dealing with the incoming 12 hour shifts at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, she knew she had to make a career change. In 1982, Lynette became a child care worker at Awasis Day Care and, almost immediately with the encouragement of the Director; Lynette began her six years of early childhood education at Grande Prairie Regional College while working in the program for school-age children. In 1988, Lynette graduated with an Early Childhood Development Diploma. In 1989, Lynette re-established the Stepping Stones Out of School Program that had not operated for five years. She ran the program for two years and then moved on to open the Queen Elizabeth II Out of School Program in 1990. In 1993, Lynette received a license to operate Ivy Lake Out of School program in the Ivy Lake Church. With the help of donors it expanded into the Army Navy & Air Force Club building. The program became everything she wanted: a unique and culturally sensitive program with a diverse environment. Lynette received many certificates of participation and accomplishments over the 24 years that she worked in the field of early learning and child-care: Early Childhood Diploma in 1988; Alberta Staff Qualifications

Someh and Natty, thank you so much for sharing your mom with our family. John and Adam followed her from Awasis to Stepping Stones to the QE II out of school program. Her joy, passion and love for the children gave me great peace of mind while I was at work. Our deepest condolences for your loss. Cate
