Murray "Hugh" Sutherland


January 15, 1939 - August 3, 2012

 

Hugh was born on January 15, 1939 and raised in the Dimsdale area by his parents Helen and Seth Sutherland. He passed away on August 3, 2012 at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie, Alberta at the age of 73. Hugh grew up on the family farm in the Dimsdale area, which then at the age of 18 he went to work on the Alaska Highway as a heavy equipment operator. In 1962, Hugh went on a blind date with Mary Dettling which turned into marriage. They had three children whom they raised in the Wembley area. In 1963, Hugh went to work for Nabors Drilling in Alaska as motor man and Heavy equipment operator. He later returned to Grande Prairie in the early 70’s to work with his brother in building Gangster Transfer. Hugh then started working for the County of Grande Prairie for 10 years running a grader and bush cutter until his early retirement. Hugh loved having coffee at Co-op, watching chuckwagon and his beloved Oilers. He will be sadly missed by children Shawn Sutherland, children Cole, Derek and Rhett Sutherland; Scott Sutherland, children Danielle and Travis Sutherland; Lana Lehners (Sutherland) married to Wilf Lehners, children Cody, Chance Tomke and Heidi Lehners; and many other family members and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Helen and Seth Sutherland; brothers, Max and John Sutherland; sisters, Lavern Milshap and Joan Kola; son-in-law, Blaire Tomke; and nephew, Murray Sutherland. The memorial service will be held in Dimsdale at the Dimsdale Hall on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 11.00 a.m. Snacks and coffee to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

My heart goes out to everyone in the family. I have known Hugh all my life. I will remember all the good times we had in the 70s & 80s. I will miss his genuine smile & laugh. I am sorry we lost him so young. I will remember all the good time for sure.
