In Loving Memory Of

Harry Friedrich Lehners

March 9, 1929 - September 16, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, Harry Friedrick Lehners, resident of Grande Prairie, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, September 16, 2012, at the age of 83 years. Harry was born on March 9, 1929 in Jever, West Germany. His home was near the North Sea and he developed a lifelong love of ships and the sea. As a young man, Harry went to agricultural school and apprenticed on a farm in North Germany. On July 3, 1954, he married Wilma Duden and shortly thereafter they immigrated to Fairview, AB. In Fairview Harry worked on the Mackay farm and also looked after the animals at the Fairview Agricultural College. On New Year’s Day, 1956, Harry and Wilma welcomed their first son, Wilfred. The following year, they moved to Grande Prairie, where Harry worked for the City of Grande Prairie. In 1958, Rita was born and John followed in 1963. Harry worked for the City for many years and then studied to become a journeyman carpenter. He began his own business and built several homes over the years. Dad was a man who could fix anything. Harry and Wilma loved to travel and visited many interesting places in North America and Europe. Dad was an avid reader and after his retirement, he enjoyed auditing classes at the College and building intricate model ships, several of which he donated to museums in Germany. Harry was predeceased by his wife, Wilma in 2009. Harry will be sadly missed by his children Wilfred (Lana) Lehners, Rita (Jack) O’Toole and John Lehners (Donna Koch), as well as his grandchildren, Cody Tomke, Chance Tomke and Heidi Lehners, Sean O’Toole (Megan Gitzel), Ryan (Melanie) O’Toole, Ashley O’Toole, Adam Lehners and Analise Lehners, his great-granddaughters, Emma and Hallie O’Toole, and very special friend and companion, Margret Benning. He also leaves behind his three brothers, Martin (Ruth) Lehners and Richard (Nancy) Lehners, both of Florida and Herman (Erna) Lehners of Jever, West Germany. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 2:00pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 9929-105 Avenue, Grande Prairie, AB. Interment to follow at the Grande Prairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross Society, 9712

To John and the Lehners Family, I just wanted to say how sorry I was to hear of Harry's passing. I met your Dad through business quite a few years after I coached you in College John. He was a fine fellow, with a great sense of humour. A real character. I always enjoyed our visits, either in our office or when I would bumo into him around town. I know he will be missed. Deepest sympathies from Laurie and I.
