Obituary For Agnes Florence May Bosscha
Agnes Florence Bosscha (nee May) of Grande Prairie, AB passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2020 in her 85th year.
Agnes was born November 23, 1934 in Edmonton, AB to the late Robert and Nancy May (nee Livingstone).
Agnes spent her early years living with her parents and younger brother Gordon on the family homestead east of Busby, AB. In 1947 the family sold the farm and moved to Edmonton, AB. In 1952 Agnes received her high school diploma from Victoria Composite High School. She went on to earn a one-year permanent Junior E teaching certificate from the UofA Faculty of Education. She was offered and accepted a teaching position immediately, wanting to be “independent and earn my own money”. Agnes taught Grade 2 and 3 until she started her own family.
In 1951, on a gravel road at Pigeon Lake, AB, Agnes had a chance meeting with a young man named Koop. They married in June 1956 and became an inseparable team. They built their first home together in Edmonton where they began raising their 4 daughters and son. The family moved to Grande Prairie in 1973. In 1979 they started Kaar Landscaping, working together for the next 20 years. In retirement they spent time travelling with family or to see family all over western Canada and the US, the Netherlands, Scotland and Australia.
Agnes was an intelligent, organized, gentle and kind soul with a beautiful smile, but when she got mad you knew there was going to be trouble. This was made very evident, in a recently shared memory, of when some of the topping of a freshly baked lemon loaf mysteriously disappeared, having been strategically picked off by one of the children.
Agnes loved baking and family and friends often benefited from this passion. Pumpkin pies were taken to the lake for Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas almond tarts were sent via the mail or bus to family members, cookies or cakes were made for Thursday morning coffee time at ‘the shop’ or for a visit to the ‘computer guys’.
What began as a necessity when the children were young, sewing, became one of Agnes’s favourite hobbies. The personally labelled quilts she made for family members are deeply cherished. Agnes was an active member of the Northern Peacemakers Quilt Guild.
Whether it be around a campfire at CGIT summer camp, with Sweet Adeline’s or in a church choir Agnes loved to sing. It was not unusual to find her out in the backyard pushing a grandchild or greatgrandchild on the swing whilst singing to them or to their delight, whistling like a bird.
Reading was a passion Agnes shared with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often gifting them books. On a warm, sunny afternoon she could be found sitting in her corner of the back porch with a cup of tea, enjoying a good book. She was a longtime member of the Grande Prairie Book Club.
Agnes and Koop spent many happy hours working together in their garden. She loved her flowers and was able to plant this year’s sweet peas, which are just starting to bloom.
Agnes had a strong faith that gave her guidance day to day and solace in life’s more challenging times. She was a member of Forbes Presbyterian Church.
Agnes was devoted to Koop and her family, always keeping in touch, being interested in everything they did and never missing a birthday. She loved going to visit her adult children and their families, wherever they might be and found great joy in these shared experiences, up to and including the night sky view from the outhouse at her daughter’s remote property in the Yukon.
Agnes is deeply loved and will be sadly missed by her husband of 64 years Koop; children: Pat (Dale) Bort, Janet (Don) Pike, Mary-Anne (Boyd) Timler, Robert Bosscha and Nancy Bosscha (Colin Bigam); grandchildren: Laura (Dan) Nauta, Eric Bort, Sean (Sharla) Bort, Tyrone (Char) Pike, Barret (Joelle) Pike, Amanda (Scott) Timler, Samantha (Mark) Haliburton, Jaima Timler and Joshua Bigam; great-grandchildren: Sandra, Carol, Graham and Diane Nauta, Hayden and Kinley Pike, Ellie, Claire and Penny Bort, and Will Haliburton; and brother: Gordon May (Karen Kryczka).
An immediate family graveside service will be held at a future date in Edmonton, AB.
Memorial donations may be made to Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation (10409 98 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 2E8, https://supportyourhospital.ca/), The Kidney Foundation of Canada (202, 11227 Jasper Ave., Edmonton, AB, T5K 0L5, www.kidney.ca/) or to Forbes Presbyterian Church (9635 76 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 5B3).

Mrs. Bosscha was such an important part of my childhood. I am saddened to hear of your loss. To start mentioning my favorite memories would be an exercise in futility there are so many...but, if I had to choose one, it would be the hundreds of cups of Constant Comment tea she made me. Her kitchen was always open to myself, Wendy Johnston, Kathleen Gibson and Kim Staple. Her legacy will be one of unconditional love, kindness, and humility. I am thinking of all of you.

I have had the honour of meeting many beautiful women in my life; one of them was Mrs. Bosscha. I met her daughter Nancy when, as my father would say, was â??knee high to a grasshopper.â?? By being Nancyâ??s friend since a child, I was most fortunate to witness her mother graciously welcome every giggly girl, every 24 hr sleep over and every late night that Shiela, Kathy, Nancy and I were out having fun. She epitomized true grace in a woman, kindness and love. I thank you Agnes for being a role model for every girl that entered your home. May I also say that you left us a true gift, my friend Nancy, a person who shaped my life as a youth and who I love to this day.

What a lovely life your Mom had. I've been praying to you to have comfort and peace, especially since you can't get home for this. Glad you have your hubby and kids there for support (and Will for distraction). Hang in there, Love Vikki

Janet I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mom. Losing a mom feels like losing a chunk of your heart. That horrible loss eases over time but honestly never goes away. What does happen is that you start to think more and more about all the great stuff and focus more and more About the great connections between your mom and yourself. All those moments spent will be such a great source of solace. Sending a huge hug and lots of love. 💕💕 Lesley
