Albert Benson passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023 in Grande Prairie at the age of 91 years.

Albert was born near Sexsmith, AB on February 12, 1932, to Sarah and Richard Benson and was raised on the family farm. Albert was just six years old when his mother passed away in October of 1939 and he lost his father in December of 1942 when he was ten years old. A few years later he moved to Edmonton with his older siblings where he attended school. Albert always managed to find his way back to Sexsmith and the Peace Country.

Albert remained close to his siblings and spent a lot of time making many memories with Art, Yvett and their family. He knew each one of his nieces and nephews’ birthdays (year and date). He loved them all very much.

Albert met Kathleen Gillies (nee Jantz) and they were married in November of 1966. They spent most of their 46 years together on the farm.

Kathleen passed away in August of 2012 and Albert stayed on the farm for a few more years. After leaving the farm he enjoyed a number of years at Pioneer Lodge and in 2020 he moved to the Grande Prairie Care Home where he stayed until his passing.

Albert leaves behind many nieces and nephews (four generations of the Benson family); as well as a step-granddaughter, two step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.

Albert was predeceased by his wife Kathleen; father Richard and mother Sarah; brothers Richard Benson, Art Benson and Carl Benson; sisters: Jean Mainwaring, Doris Letniak, Evelyn Benson, Anne French and Thelma Gouchey. Albert’s stepdaughter Doreen Locke passed after him in February of 2024.

A Memorial Service with a Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at 1:00pm at Oliver’s Funeral Home (10005 107 Ave.) in Grande Prairie, AB. Interment will follow the Luncheon at St. Stephens Anglican Cemetery in Teepee Creek, AB (HWY 674 and RR 44).
