Obituary For Alice Dean

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Alice Loraine Dean on Sunday, August 7, 2016, at Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie, AB at the age of 64 years.

Alice was born in Toronto, ON on June 1, 1952. She was a daughter of the late Loraine Neil and Andrew “Roy” Neil, now of St. John, NB.

Mourning their deep loss are her three children: sons Lloyd (Pilar) of Port Moody, BC, Jeffory (Kayla and her son Tristan) of La Glace, AB; and daughter Tammy (Alphonse “Fonz”) of Aspen Grove, AB. She will be truly missed by her sister Josie (Randy Pike) of Westfield, NB, special nephew Jonathan Pike (Priscilla and their son Caél) of Fort McMurray, AB, as well as several nieces, nephews and in-laws in Newfoundland.

The bright lights in her life were her four 'Sugar Bears'....her grandchildren: Kody and Kayden Short, Jack Dean, and Gage Dean. She liked nothing better than to spend time with her boys. Each boy had his own door frame where his growth was recorded annually. Her cupboards always hid a few treats that they might not have been allowed at home. Sleepovers at Grandma's were the best.

Besides her husband and her mother, Alice was also predeceased by her parents in-law, Ethel and Willam Dean.

Following her marriage to William Dean she moved to Newfoundland, where together they raised their three children of whom they were very proud. After Will's death in 2003, Alice moved to Alberta to be nearer those children.

At the time of her death, Alice was employed with Wapiti Gravel, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She was a scrap booker extraordinaire, ardent reader (belonging to a local book club in Aspen Grove) and shopper. In her later years, Alice did some travelling and was always ready for an adventure. She was an excellent cook and her family started anticipating her Christmas packages in November, which arrived in the mail filled with her delicious cakes, cookies, and squares. They were always received with great delight. Alice loved having her family around her table whenever their work schedules allowed for a meal.

Sheldon Jones, her best friend, will miss her smile, their chats and the hi-jinks they would occasionally get up to. Thank you, Sheldon, for being there for our Mom at the drop of a hat. We will never forget your kindness.

Alice also leaves behind her canine companion, Callie. Callie showed up on her doorstep a few years ago and, being the kind hearted person she was, Alice invited the scrawny dark furred dog in. It wasn't until after a bath that she discovered Callie's fur is white. During her illness Callie never left Alice's side.

The family wishes to thank the Home Care Nurses who visited and cared for her health needs during the past year, and Dr. Ife Obuekwe for his assistance during this most difficult time as well as the staff at Points West Hospice, especially Amy, Alyssa and Lynn. We cannot name all of the staff, but each member brought her own special gifts for which Alice was truly grateful.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2015, from 6:30-8:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

There will be a Funeral Service at a later date in Victoria, NL.

I had the pleasure of seeing Alice before she passed away. She expressed that we all have only one life to live and without all of you, her life would not have been full. I know she felt blessed. You have all made her so very proud in so many ways. She will always be with you all each and every day. She was and is an "Angel" in my books.

I know Alice from our book club, South Wapiti Readers. I didn't know her well, because shortly after I met her she became ill. Since I'm in a wheelchair I couldn't get into her house. I admired her greatly, and enjoyed her sense of humour. We book club members are shocked by her loss, but I'm sure it's nothing compared to what her family feels.

Our hearts are heavy with sorrow this past week for all of you. Aunt Alice was a beautiful aunt who always too the time to speak and give you her undividied attention. She always made what you said seem as important to her as it was to you. She had the most beautiful persona that one could not help but be drawn to her. I always remember her in beautiful endearing smile and laugh. I always think if her when I see a Tweed square (lol) as it was at her and uncle Will's that I first tasted them. They were yummy! I remember her writing many a letter to her Mom and Dad always one started and laid out for her to add she said as she got time. Three children no doubt she had to do it when she got time. She had beautiful penmanship. Always a note for what she needed to pick up for cookies or cooking. I could go on and on. Hold her memories close to help carry you through the day, weeks and years ahead. Know she loved you all. Aunt Alice you will be missed and you will always be loved dearly. We wish we could have taken the pain away. No doubt you are in a better place today. Love you sweet angel. Dana Hillier (John)

What a beautiful tribute to Alice. She was a beautiful lady inside and out. Always speaking of her children with the love of a mother. She had to move and be close to you all. It was definitely where her heart was. Though we home here in NL missed her so much. She never missed a phone call that she never said how much she missed Will. You could picture the smile on her face when she spoke his name. She is with him now and no doubt smiling down on you all. Josie she spoke often of you and her last wonderful trip to NB in the Spring. She loved all of you cherish the laughter, the smile and the memories. Keep her spirit with you always and speak her name so the grand children whom she loved dearly will remember the love of their beautiful grandmother. Alice we will miss you and we too will speak your name with love and admiration. You were a dear sister in law. Love, Uncle Harold and Aunt Linda
