Obituary For Alice Hennigar Braumberger

Alice Braumberger passed away on Monday, February 15, 2016, at the age of 95 years.

Alice was born on March 27, 1920, in Lattes Brook, Hants County, Nova Scotia to Christian and Gladys Hennigar. Alice left Nova Scotia on St. Patrick’s Day 1928, with her parents, older sister Eva, two younger brothers Lawrence and Art, and neighbors the Isaac Ray family, to come and homestead in Bad Heart, AB. Three more children, Wes, Fred, and Audrey, were born here.

Alice’s family had a hard life homesteading during the depression and operating a small sawmill. Her mother was sickly and Alice and Eva had to take over their mother’s work when they were 10 and 11. Alice was smart and loved school. She attended Bad Heart School as far as it went. She wanted to further her education, but the family was too poor to board her out.

Alice met Bruno Braumberger, another Bad Heart homesteader who was also a handsome bachelor 10 years her senior, at local dances or ball games. They married October 29, 1938 and raised a large family of 8 boys and 2 girls. They lost many possessions but survived the fire of May 4, 1944. Later that year, they moved north of Sexsmith to continue farming. They raised pigs and registered Herefords. They sold the farm and moved to Sexsmith in 1977. There they loved to garden, plant flowers and feed all their children and grandchildren. Alice enjoyed immensely the two trips back to Nova Scotia she was able to make during her retirement.

Alice is survived by Louise Braumberger, Rose (Bill) Badger, Ray (Marion) Braumberger, Larry, Dale and Danny Braumberger, Shirley Milinkovic, Dennis (Correen) Braumberger and Ron (AnnaBelle) Braumberger. She also has 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild.

Alice was predeceased by her husband Bruno (1994), son Gary (1989), son Ernie (2015), daughter in-law Angie, and son in-law Chuck Milinkovic. She was the last of the original Hennigar family.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 2:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave).

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
