Obituary For Alice Marian Chrenek
Alice Chrenek passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the age of 83 years.
Alice was the youngest child of Robert (Bob) and Myrtle Jordan. She was born on November 6, 1940, in Woking, AB, where she was also raised. After graduating high school, Alice went to the University of Alberta at the age of 16 to become a teacher. Upon completing her studies, Alice returned to Woking and started teaching kindergarten to grade 9.
Alice married Louis Chrenek on November 19, 1960, and then moved to Sexsmith, AB where she and Lou took over the family farm. Lou and Alice spent the next 35 years farming, raising four boys, and enjoying many relationships with family and friends.
Life on the farm was busy including both a mixed grain operation and a small cow-calf operation. Alice maintained a large garden, participated as a member of the Catholic Women’s League, and enjoyed many hobbies and creative pursuits. Meanwhile, each of the four boys maintained very active sports involvement which included hockey, football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, curling, hunting, fishing, and golf.
The primary sports activity in the Chrenek household was hockey. There was seldom a winter week during the boys’ teenage years that did not involve at least one hockey practice in Grande Prairie before school as well as most evenings and weekends attending practices or games.
Alice was an excellent student. She had an aptitude for academics from an early age including winning the Governor General’s Medal for the highest scholastic achievement in grade 9. Alice continued to take university-level courses by correspondence well into her 40s and continued to excel in those pursuits despite her hectic family commitments. She passed on a lifelong love of learning to her children and grandchildren.
In 1996, Lou and Alice moved to Grande Prairie where Alice’s love of teaching and her love of quilting collided in her work at the Patchwork Cottage. Alice was an avid quilter and took great pleasure in teaching others the art. She taught quilting lessons and helped make the business operated by her close friend, Marian Clarkson, a success. Alice developed a network of friends through quilting, attending Quilting Believers, and making and donating quilts to many worthy causes in the region.
Those that knew Alice best, realized that she was a very kind and caring person. She will be dearly missed by the many friends and family who had the good fortune to know her. Alice is survived by her children: Jim, Evan (Karen), Bob (Donna), and Gord (Andrea); sister Doris Toerper; brother Lester Jordan; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Alice was predeceased by her husband Louis Chrenek, daughters-in-law Lisa Chrenek and Jennifer Boyd, brother-in-law Karl Toerper, and sister-in-law Marlene Jordan.
The family wishes to thank Prairie Lake Seniors Community and their compassionate and caring staff.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 2:00 pm, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grande Prairie (10404 102 St.)
Interment at the Grande Prairie Cemetery will follow the service and luncheon
The family has requested that any donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, Grande Prairie (https://alzheimer.ca/ab/en).
