Obituary For Alwyn “Al” Duncan McBean

Al McBean, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away peacefully in his sleep, on Thursday, February 10, 2022, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at the age of 72 years.

Al was born to Peter and Lillian McBean on July 19, 1949, in Linden, AB, and was raised in Eaglesham, AB.

Al was a welder by trade and worked in and out of town all over British Columbia and Alberta. He was adventurous in trying new things. He opened a Tim Hortons in Grande Prairie, and then decided to return to welding, and finally retired in 2013 from Roy Larson Construction.

He met the love of his life, Joyce, in January 1976, and married on September 25, 1976. They lived in Grande Prairie and started their family having daughter Lisa, and son Peter. Al enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. In 2017, Al located his birth daughter Becky, this addition delighted him so much, that everyone would hear how big his family was. Al’s extended family also included all of the Storm Hockey Billets that came to live with them, while raising their own children.

Al’s compassion for having loved ones around was no secret, he loved talking about all of them. Recently he also filled your ears with stories of his five grandchildren.

Al loved to travel with Joyce on multiple cruises and many family trips. He was a motorcycle enthusiast and spent many hours on the road with “114 Ave Thunder” the buddies. Camping and coffee groups were very important to him. Al also loved his Sunday morning A&W crew, with friends that became family (the Knoblauch’s). He loved to be with friends and neighbors, and help out anytime he could.

Though the years Al was always positive, happy and had a great sense of humor, and he loved to tease. He had a giggle that would fill a room.

Al will be missed by his wife Joyce of 45 years; children: Lisa McBean, Peter (Melanie) McBean, and Becky (Corey) Quigg; grandchildren: Piper and Zoey McBean, Steven, Emily and Thomas Quigg; Eric Von Hertzberg that became a son to him; brother Lee (Daphne) Anderson; sister Ida-Marie (Dave) Robertson; sister Georgie (Roy) Larson; uncle Claude Burroughs; mother and father in-law Herta and Herman Briese; brother in-law David Tews; sister in-law Anita Briese; sister and brother in-law Cindy (Darren) Lock; as well as many nieces, nephews, close friends, and extended family.

Al was predeceased by his parents Peter and Lillian McBean; sister baby Penny; father in-law Albert Tews; niece Terri Martin; as well as nephew Garrett Larson.

The family would like to thank Dr. Pope, Dr. Hattingh, Dr. Grendavora, Dr. Mok, Dr. Beuker, and the many nurses at the Cancer Clinic that he loved to joke around with. You all showed us and Al great compassion.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring or summer of 2022.

As a southern Ontario boy playing for the Grande Prairie Storm, I had the privilege of being welcomed into the McBean residence by Al and Joyce; two of the kindest people I had ever met. The smile that Al always seemed to have on his face was contagious and one that I won't ever forget. There was nothing better than coming home from the rink and catching up with Al, who always made time to chat. Al was the type of person who made you feel welcomed and at home. Al, you will always be missed but never forgotten. God bless and rest easy.
