Obituary For Andrew "Andy" Bryan Smith
Andrew “Andy” Smith, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at his home, at the age of 76 years.
Andy was born in Portage La Prairie, MB, on December 2, 1944. He lived in Manitoba most of his life in Bagot, Shilo, and Brandon. He built his own house in Brandon, with the help of his parents, and his wife Helen. He moved to Grande Prairie in 1984, when there was no work in Brandon.
Andy enjoyed playing the bagpipes, and would look forward to Remembrance Day, when he would play the Lament at the Cenotaph. He was a member of the 26 Field Regiment Pipe Band in Brandon for over 12 years.
Andy did the odd carpentry and renovation jobs. He enjoyed camping, spending time with his kids, grandkids, and his dog Patches.
Andy will be sadly missed by his wife Helen; sons: David, Donald, and Darcy and their families; his daughters in-law Amy Smith and Victoria Mattson-Smith; grandchildren: Taran Smith, Jaydalyn Smith, Kayden, Bryson, Rylan, Lynden Smith, Kie Mattson, Kristen Mattson, Melody Mattson-Smith, Lexie Mattson-Smith, and Cameron Wassell. He spent a lot of time with his dog Patches, who will miss him dearly; as well as friends and members of the pipe band.
Andy was predeceased by his parents, and five brothers and sisters.
A Viewing will be held on Monday, November 1, 2021, from 11:00am-12:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Funeral Service to follow. Interment to follow at the Emerson Trail Cemetery (62048 Twp Rd 672, Sexsmith, AB, T0H 3C0).

Helen and family, I'm was so shocked and heartbroken to get the phone call about Andy's passing. I wanted to be there with all of you but Covid, and restrictions and distance are all against that happening plus listening to my big sister when she told us not to travel that far this time of year so this is the best thing I can do. Andy was the most amazing brother in law anyone could ask for. I remember when you were dating and he played Happy Birthday on his pipes for me and Mary Had A Little Lamb and others. He was a very talented piper and I remember listening to him many times throughout his life. He was always there to help anytime while living in Brandon. The best thing he did for me was introducing me to my husband Bob, who he also got to play the pipes. Andy played the pipes at Bob's funeral 7 years ago and I appreciate him doing that. Andy was a very caring person who loved Helen and his family very much and always had a funny tale to tell or a very funny joke. He loved life and lived his life to the fullest. He will be missed by all who knew him and life without him will be so different. I'm very proud to have had him as a member of our family. My deepest condolences to Helen, David, Donald, Darcy and their families. Hugs to all and love you very much. Joan Smith and family

It is with great sadness that I read this. Andy and I were co-workers at a communications company, but more important then that, we were friends. Andy did contracting work on our home in Grande Prairie and he was always fun to sit and have a coffee with, share a laugh and just be friends. Although working caused us to drift apart I worked with his son David and always kept abreast of how he was. This comes as a shock and with great sadness. Dave, Helen, and family, Patty and I wish your family all the best in this difficult time. Condolences from us to all of you. May you always feel the love of Andy. Dwayne and Patricia Vadeboncoeur.
