Obituary For Arlene Sophie Martin

Arlene Sophie Martin lived a full and beautiful life. Arlene passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at the Hythe Continuing Care Centre, at the age of 94 years.

We are truly sad to say goodbye, but Arlene left us a legacy of remarkable memories to live by. She will be missed forever and remembered for how she embarked upon everything in life with energy and optimism.

Arlene was well known for her kindness and thinking of others ahead of herself. Her sharp mind was with her to the end and served her very well as a daughter, sister, wife, business partner, mother, auntie, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Arlene especially enjoyed gathering with neighbors, friends, and family to celebrate any occasion. She loved a good laugh. Arlene was very proud of her communities: growing up in Halcourt, Alberta, farming near Rio Grande, Alberta, and retiring in Beaverlodge, Alberta. Throughout her life she volunteered with multiple organizations, culminating in her being awarded The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award in 2004. Arlene remains a true inspiration to her family for life remarkably well lived!

Arlene was born July 15, 1927, in Cadillac, Saskatchewan. Her family relocated to the Peace Country where she grew up and went to school as the oldest of five sisters. It was in the Halcourt area where she met the love of her life Roy Archibald “Conley” Martin. Arlene and Conley were married December 27, 1947, and ultimately settled in the Rio Grande area where they successfully farmed together for many years. During that time, they raised their three children: Dianne, Heather, and Roy.

Arlene continues to inspire her children: Dianne (Bernie) Dunbar, Heather (John Bergeron) Martin, and Roy (Cleo) Martin; grandchildren: Brenda (Kelly) Smith, Conlan Bergeron, Sarah Bergeron, Michael Martin, Bobby Martin, and Thomas Martin; great-grandchildren: Naomi Smith (Paul McKenzie), Angelina (Kyle) Small, Rayan Smith and Sierra Smith; great-great-grandchildren Evelyn McKenzie and Bodhi McKenzie; as well as sisters Verona (Karen) Sturrock and Mary Bartman.

Arlene was predeceased by her parents Clarence and Hazel (nee Kunnick) Christopherson; husband Conley; grandson Cameron Dunbar; sister and brother in-law Louise and Don Kinsman; sister and brother in-law Phyllis and Don Sherk; brother in-law Dave Sturrock; brother in-law Don Bartman; as well as brothers and sisters in-law: John and Patsy Martin, Sam and Peggy Martin, Jennie and Peter McNaughton, Robert and Eleanor Martin, Sadie and Bill Baird, Lois and Tom Hill, and Arthur and Joyce Martin.

A Celebration of Life will be held later this year, time and place to be determined.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Hythe Nursing Home Foundation (Box 100, Hythe, AB, T0H 2C0).

Hi Dianne and Heather, so sorry to hear about your Mom's passing. I so much enjoyed her love and wit. She was so cute how she remembered your name and said it several times in the conversation! Loved her for being so up beat always! I know that you have great memories. Sincerely Marlene and Maynard

Darling Arlene, the sweetest, funniest lady around. Such a great neigbour, inviting our children to take a shortcut through her driveway on the way to school, to avoid traffic; so generous and fully committed to her Church activities, her community, her family and friends. She entered everything so willingly, and made it all so enjoyable. She will never be forgotten, and my children will also be very sad to hear of her loss. With deepest sympathy on your having to say goodbye, and knowing she's already organizing favulous teas in Heaven.
