Obituary For Bernadette "Bernie" Mary Rose Veronica Wells (nee Labrecque)
Bernie Wells, resident of Spirit River, AB, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2022, at the age of 89 years.
Bernie was raised on a farm with 6 siblings in which she was the second eldest. She had many responsibilities on the farm, none of which she was fond of. After graduating she moved to Calgary, AB, landing a job she loved and meeting the love of her life Jerry Wells. They were married on December 19, 1956. Their first son Dwayne was born in the fall of 1957, and they moved back to the farm in 1958.
They started their farm life together surrounded by Bernie’s large family and created a large family of their own. Soon to follow were Brodie, Dwight, Shenda, and Terri. On October 31, 1969, they moved to the current Wells farm. Over the next 30 years, Bernie and Jerry continued to grow the farm and bought the well know “HUB” aka Dedette’s Confectionary. They continued to be strong pillars in the community.
Bernie enjoyed playing the piano, knitting endless touques and mitts, and leading the Catholic Women’s League in many successful fundraisers.
It was unique to have 5 children stay and raise their families in Spirit River. She felt very blessed to have them all so close every day. On any given day of the week, one or all would be around the kitchen table for supper, nothing made her happier. She lived her life for her family. When Jerry passed Bernie struggled to find a life on her own. She lived to take care of her grandchildren and keep up with the busy lives of her 5 children. She was kind, generous, and would help anyone in need. The coffee was always on, she loved to catch up with neighbors and friends.
Bernie will be sadly missed by her children: Dwayne (Venus), Brodie (Gail), Dwight (Angie), Shenda (Sean), and Terri (Rob); grandchildren: Leah, Daelyn (Shaun), Jordan, Morgan (Karl), Tanner, Brandon, Sam, Teneille, Austin, and Jaycee (Rene); as well as great-grandchildren: Ainsley and Jace.
Bernie was predeceased by her Husband Jerry; granddaughter Taylor; parents Fred and Vera Labrecque; as well as siblings: Yvonne, Romeo, and Lawrence.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 30, 2022, at 1:00pm, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Spirit River (5019 43 Ave.). Interment to follow at Old Mission Cemetery. Luncheon to follow at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church.
