Obituary For Berthe Brochu O'Flaherty

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother Berthe “Bert” O’Flaherty, on Monday, May 16, 2016, at the age of 97 years.

Mom was born in Lac La Biche, Alberta to Octave and Annie (Dupont) Brochu; the second of eight children. The family moved to Colington, near Athabasca, where Mom attended school till grade nine. Mom attended a French Convent in Edmonton for her high school. After high school she went to work for Woodwards.

Mom and Dad married in 1948. They lived in Edmonton and St. Albert before buying Northern Glass Ltd. in 1964 and moving to Grande Prairie.

Mom was very active in service groups all her life; in St. Albert: the Royal Canadian Legion, Girl Guides and CWL; in Grande Prairie it was The Hospital Auxillary from the 1960's. She has received recognition for 30 years of service from the QEII Foundation and over 60 years with the CWL.

Mom was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Tom, in 2002, son Ken in 2012 and infant daughter, Debbie in 1962.

Mom is survived by: Pat (Tom) and children: Mike (Cheryl) Adam, Ken (Monique) and Chris (Nadia); Theresa (Randy) and children: Jeff, Jessica and Jodie (Malcolm); Ron (Cindy) and children Nicole and Nolan; sister Terry Murphy; sisters in-law Bea Brochu, Marion Brochu and Enid Kyle; six great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

We wish to thank Dr. Noga and Dr. Barreth, the wonderful and caring Staff of Points West Hospice and the Staff and Homecare at Emerald Gardens.

Prayers will be held Thursday, May 19, 2016, at 7:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 10:00am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grande Prairie (10404 102 St.) with Father Ed Eherer C.Ss.R. presiding.

Donations in Mom's memory can be made to QEII Hospital Auxiliary (6910 94A St. Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 5S6) or to the Grande Prairie Hospice Palliative Care Society (Box 21215, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 6W7).

    My sincere condolences. Auntie Berthe lived a truly amazing life. I have wonderful memories of her from when I was growing up. She was always very kind to me. I'm so glad we were all able to get together for her 90th birthday. She will be missed.

    I'm very sorry to hear of Bert's passing. She was a wonderful lady, whose influence shines through in the kind and generous family she raised. I'm glad I was able to meet her when I did. My thoughts and prayers are with the O'Flaherty, Uzelman, and Tenszen families today. Take care.
