Obituary For â??Billâ?? William Henry Scott

“Bill” William Henry Scott, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at the age of 78 years.

Bill was born in Toronto, and raised in Wawa, ON. He studied journalism at the Ryerson Institute of Technology and moved west in the early 60’s finally settling in Grande Prairie in 1964.

He worked for the Daily Herald Tribune for over 50 years; officially retiring in 2004, but continued to help out and write until September of 2017. He wrote his last Potpourri column on September 14, 2017 and was delighted with all the “likes” and “shares”.

Bill loved to cook, listen to music, and play with the MaPa Community Band, the Grande Prairie Marching Band, and the Salvation Army Church Band. Over the years he also enjoyed bowling, curling, his beloved Blue Jays, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He also had a non-committal relationship with the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Throughout his career, his true labour of love was the weekly Potpourri column in the Daily Herald Tribune. He was always thrilled to share a humorous moment or interesting anecdote about his family, friends and the interesting people of this city. One long running thread through this 45 year article was the thinly disguised personal identities of his family. It began with “The Wife”, continued with sons 1, 2, and 3, followed by Mrs 1, 2, and 3 and then ultimately grandchildren 1,2,3,4 and counting.

Bill and Eva celebrated their 49th anniversary in April, 2017 and had plans for the 50th. Dad will be sadly missed by Ian and Deanna; Peter and Kaira; and Andrew and Julie. Poppa will be missed by “the angel babes” – grandchildren: Joshua, Duncan, Ayren, and Evelyn; and his Costa Rican family Deyory, Jonathan, and Christopher.

Bill was also blessed with a wonderful extended family. George and Shirley Scott; Bob and Judy Kenneway; Gordon Picken; and cousins in Eastern Canada. Plus the best nephews and nieces in the world and special people like Pam.

Bill’s Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at 11:00am, at the Salvation Army Community Church (9525 83 Ave). Please join the family for lunch at the church following the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Erin Lowry Memorial Fund at The Grande Prairie Salvation Army Community Church (9525 83 Ave, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 6V1) or to the Grande Prairie Cancer Centre (C/O Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation) (10409 98 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 2E8).

I'm so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I have many memories of Bill, and we both shared interests in music, history and even a bit of writing. We were both about the same age and had lots in common. He was a person I trusted explicitly. I will miss him.

I worked with Bill for many years at the DHT, he was a great mentor and a smart, witty and a no nonsense fella. My deepest sympathies to your entire family.

Eva and family, I only saw Bill on a couple of occasions after returning to Grande Prairie in 2007 and it saddened me deeply to hear of his passing. The celebration of life brought back many wonderful memories of Bill. He was a superb writer and editor while being a great leader in the newsroom who knew how to show colleagues that you can balance hard work with fun. Thanks to Bill, I participated in my first hockey pools and car rallies. I appreciated visiting your home to enjoy Bill's love of cooking and music. He walked the talk when it came to community spirit and volunteerism, two attributes I live by today. I recall fondly Friday afternoons at Dar's where Bill would hold court with discussions of news of the week. Unless you were working still or out of town, there was no other reason not to be at Dar's for those weekly get-togethers. RIP, Bill. Journalism and Grande Prairie will miss you dearly.
