Obituary For Cecil Edward Pizzey

Cecil Pizzey, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long struggle of medical complications, on Monday, March 20, 2023, in his home, at the age of 65 years.

He was born on June 9, 1957, in Williams Lake, BC, to Richard and Elsie Pizzey (nee Lockwood). In 1980, he married Bernadette Blumhegen, together they raised their daughter Amanda and son Daniel.

Cecil began his working career as a logger then later had a road grading company based in the hamlet of Valhalla, AB. Cecil was an avid drag racer before 2011 when he was disabled due to cancer complications.

He appeared in several newspaper articles advocating for the disabled. He received multiple Certificates of Appreciation for Chair-Leaders Enabling Access from Spinal Cord Injury Alberta [formerly Canadian Paraplegic Association]; and SCI Alberta regional volunteer award in 2015. In 2016, he got a Tim Hortons Award in recognition of valuable volunteerism for Spinal Cord Injury Alberta. In 2017, Cecil received the Marlin Styner Award for Outstanding Achievement from the Alberta Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, as well as recognition from the Rolling Bowlers Team and the Bowling Stones 10 Pin Mixed Adult League.

Cecil was a member of Swan City Football Club Power-Soccer and loved playing on the Grande Prairie team. He was also on the boards of the Grande Prairie Residential Society, Spinal Cord Injury Alberta, and the Wolverines Wheelchair Sports Association.

Cecil was an active member of the People’s Church in Grande Prairie.

We will miss him more than words can express and are comforted knowing he is with his Lord and at peace.

Cecil is survived by his daughter Amanda Pizzey; siblings Victor (Carol) and Richard (Jacqueline); his wife Bernadette; daughter in-law Crystle; as well as grandchildren: Chivez, Shynae, Jayden, Kaella, and Kaelee.

Cecil was predeceased by his son Daniel; parents Richard and Elsie; sister Faye; as well as brother Thomas.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at 2:00pm, at People’s Church in Grande Prairie (11850 108 St.).

A Livestream of the service will be accessible 15 minutes prior to the service on Cecil’s obituary on Oliver’s Funeral Home website.

Cecil was like a shining star on Sunday mornings at Peoples Church when he handed us our bulletin. He always made our day. We are going to miss him but we are so happy he is with our Lord. Until we meet again Cecil. Love Will and Brenda.
