Obituary For Charles Walter Grubisich

Charles Walter Grubisich, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away Friday, May 28, 2021, at the age of 85 years.

Charles, born on July 27, 1935, was the oldest of four children born to Walter and Marie Grubisich. His parents were Croatian immigrants who made their first home in the coal branch near Hinton, AB. The family moved to the Silverwood area near Rycroft, AB in 1947 to begin homesteading. Following the death of his family in 1949, Charles lived with the Stanich family until he moved to Fairview to attend agricultural college.

Shortly after graduation, he married his high school sweetheart Joyce Laurin, and they started their first of many businesses, Central Peace Dairies. While living in Rycroft, they had four children and worked tirelessly growing CPD into the largest independent dairy in Alberta. In 1974, they sold the dairy and moved to Grande Prairie where Charles continued to expand his business interests. He was an active member of the business community in the Grande Prairie area for over 60 years.

Charles loved to work. His passion was business and the people who were part of what he did. He loved spending time with family and friends, whether on the golf course, at a curling bonspiel, on the Lovsin group’s fishing trips, on the deck at Sturgeon Lake, winters in Phoenix, summers in the Okanagan, or captaining the Fancy Free. He loved a good (or bad) debate, and a glass of cheap red wine while doing any of the above.

Charles will be dearly missed by his wife of 64 years Joyce; children: Ken (Donna), Garth (Sheila), Laura (Eric), and Mark (Lynn); grandchildren: Scott, Danielle, Rob, Alyssa, Jordan, Ben, Sam, Pearce and Lauren; and great-grandchildren Kierra and Seth.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 4, 2021, at 10:00am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grande Prairie. Due to public health restrictions, attendance will be limited to immediate family. Friends and family are invited to join via live stream on Oliver’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/olivers.funeral.home).

Dear Joyce and Family, Ken, Garth, Laura and Mark. My sincere thoughts are with You all with the sad news of Charlie's passing. I will always remember Uncle Charlie's soft spoken manner and the kindness and respect he always showed towards my Mom and Dad. He reached out to me on several occasions, after Mom and Dad were gone, just to see if I was ok. Those conversatios meant so much to me at the time, and always will. Never one to blow his own horn, he always was interested in how I and my Family were doing. A fine Uncle,...a true Gentleman. Jonathon Stanich
