Obituary For Claude Lagace

Claude Walter Guy Lagace, longtime resident of Sexsmith, AB, passed away peacefully on Saturday September 29, 2018, in Grande Prairie, at the age of 66 years.

Claude was completely dedicated to his family and community. For the past eleven years, Claude served as Mayor of the Town of Sexsmith. Previously, he was a Councilor for the Town of Sexsmith for nine years. Claude was actively involved in numerous community organizations including chair of the Grande Spirit Foundation, member of Citizens on Patrol, and represented Sexsmith as a shareholder for Aquatera since the town joined the utility.

Claude was instrumental in the development of many projects in Sexsmith including the medical clinic, spray park, fire hall and, most recently the Lakeview Seniors Home in Clairmont among countless others. In 2012, he was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, for his dedicated service to his community.

Claude’s dedication to his community was rivaled only by his commitment to his family. He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife of almost 45 years Noreen Lagace; daughters: Michelle (Richard) Wallace and Laurie (Darby) Olson; grandchildren: Lia and Lauren Wallace, and Becker, Reid and Coyne Olson; and siblings: Norman, Jacques (Claudette), Ghislaine, Remy (Shonna), Gilles (Debby), Camille (Lisa), Richard (Glenna), Sara and their families.

He was predeceased by his mother Francoise, father Richard, and siblings Andre (Clara) and Rhea. The loss that is felt in his family and community is immeasurable.

A Memorial celebrating Claude’s life will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at 1:00pm at the Peace River Bible Institute Auditorium in Sexsmith (9601 100 St.).

Memorial donations may be made to the Grande Spirit Foundation (9505 102 Ave., Grande Prairie , AB, T8V 7G9), an organization that Claude held dear in his heart.

Noreen and family. I wanted to wish you my sincere condolences on Claudeâ??s passing. He was a remarkable, caring, honest man and he will be deeply missed. The thing I will miss about him most is his humour. You never knew whether he was serious because his sense of humour was so dry and I will miss the practical jokes we tormented each other with. He cared for this community and region and works tirelessly to promote it and see it grow and prosper. There will be no one able to fill his shoes. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I met Claude many years ago & got to know him when I served as Councillor for the County of Grande Prairie 2007 to 2013. A gracious man. kind hearted & always looked for the best solution to the issue at hand. Work was more enjoyable if Claude was in attendance, it was just who he was. When I lost the next election, our relationship wasn't altered in 'his eyes'. I will miss bumping into him, he was one of those unique people who left you smiling if not outwardly, then definitely inwardly. Sincere sympathies & prayers for Claude's family. His eyes would shine when speaking of you. May God be with you in this time of sorrow. Regards fr Sharon Nelson

Noreen, Michelle,Laurie and families, we are so sorry to hear of Claude's passing but I know that he suffered privately. I so cherish having worked with Claude for all those years and we had many good discussions, meetings and laughs brought about by his dry sense of humour. I have much respect for him and feel that we accomplished much for the Town. He was so dedicated to the Town and community and so proud of his grandsons and those beautiful little grand daughters. Although he is gone, his spirit lives on in his love for you Noreen, and in the values he taught his daughters and grandchildren. His accomplishments will be remembered through many ways about the Town and we will think of him often. - Carrie Gaunt

I was lucky enough to know Claude, starting first with my time at Aquatera. It was there I would enjoy our phone chats, meetings in person, and writing him out of speaking (at his request, haha). I also was lucky enough to write a few speeches on his behalf during those days. In recent years, I worked with Claude through a few projects at the town. I always enjoyed any time with Claude, and although he was a man known for few words, that was not my experience with him behind the scenes. He was the more social of elected officials, and he would always come to say hello on the way in and goodbye on the way out. About a year ago, we sat down for coffee and had a great long chat before a short chat about the business of the day. It was one of those rare times it was just the two of us, but of course, he had to stop to chat with anyone he knew. He was quietly generous with his time, and I greatly admired this of him. From popping into an event to joining me on a tour, Claude has been a constant during my nine years in Grande Prairie. I feel very lucky for that, and will miss his presence and guidance. Thank you for your laugh, guidance, and wit. I will miss you my friend. To Noreen, Michelle, Laurie, grandchildren and extended family and friends, I share in your loss, and you are in my thoughts as we all say goodbye.
