Obituary For Clayton Michael "Mike" Collins

Mike Collins, resident of Happy Valley, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the Grey Nuns Hospital, in Edmonton, AB, at the age of 73 years.

Mike was born on September 20, 1950, at the Grande Prairie Hospital, to Mel and Beryl Collins. In 1956 his family moved to Happy Valley.

Mike attended school in Spirit River and college in Edmonton, before moving to Calgary in 1971, where he began work as a geophysicist, employed in the oil and gas industry.

Mike married Marge Zahara on August 26, 1972, and together they had three children: Craig, Kelly, and Rory. In 1978 they begain their nomadic life, living six months in Calgary, and six months on a farm in Happy Valley, before making Happy Valley their permanent home. Mike began farming full-time in 1988, and to support his farming he operated with various oil and gas companies.

Mike took an active role in his children’s sports, taking on various coaching and administrative duties. He loved the independent lifestyle of a farm, especially quadding, target shooting, and raising his beloved animals. He loved to read, study history, and follow the stock market. He was an ardent Calgary Flames fan, and later became a big-time Toronto Blue Jays fan.

Mike will be sadly missed by his wife Marge Collins; children: Craig Collins, Kelly (Matt) Eskerod, and Rory (Vion) Collins; grandchildren: Jasper and Kai Eskerod, and Finn Collins; sister Pat (Vern) Howrish; brothers-in-law Danny (Denise) Zahara and Jim (Julie) Zahara; and sisters-in-law Peggy (Doug) Hollingworth, Sandi Zahara and families.

Mike was predeceased by parents Mel and Beryl Collins, parents-in-law Willie and Della Zahara; nephews: Joel Zahara, and Adam and Eric Hollingworth; as well as brother-in-law Bob Zahara.

A Family Graveside Service will be held at a later date.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta and NWT (heartandstroke.ca/donations), or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
