Obituary For David Robert Hagerman

David Robert Hagerman, resident of Sexsmith, AB, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at the age of 70 years.

David was born in Calgary, AB, and was raised in several farming communities throughout Alberta. The family moved to a homestead near Blueberry Mountain, AB, in 1961. He attended school there until his high school years, when he attended Spirit River High School and graduated in 1970.

David’s work life began with a job at a coal mine in Grande Cache, AB. Returning to Grande Prairie in 1971, he met the love of his life, Gwen Tetreau. He set up his own business, the Sharp Shop, and on September 30, 1972, he and Gwen married.

They lived in Clairmont, AB, for a time and welcomed their son Brian in 1973. That fall, they moved to Grande Prairie, where Christine was born in 1975. In 1975, David and Gwen decided to go farming. They bought David’s Dad’s farm in Blueberry Mountain, where they worked and lived until 1980.

David and Gwen made the decision to live their lives for Jesus in the winter of 1979/80. God called them to go to Peace River Bible Institute, where they studied from 1980 until 1982. This began for David a life of fulfilling his calling to service, ministry, and helping.

Following their studies, they participated in a church plant at Doe River, north of Rolla, BC. Subsequently, they joined Rolla Baptist Church and worked for a time in the North Peace region.

On their return to the Grande Prairie area, David worked for Wilton Funeral Home where he developed his compassionate heart for those who grieve. He also worked with PRBI in maintenance and construction.

David continued to work in construction trades, installing windows and doors for Peace Windows and forming his own construction company where he worked until his passing.

Two Christian missions benefited from David’s construction expertise – one in Montana in 1989, and one in Papua, New Guinea in February 1999.

David found his way back into the funeral industry in March of 2018 and joined the staff at Oliver’s Funeral Home until his retirement in October 2021. David was a Funeral Attendant and so much more. His handy work can be found throughout their facilities. His legacy will live on through the staff at Oliver’s who consider him part of their family. His kind and caring spirit will be greatly missed.

David is survived by his wife of 49 years Gwen; son Brian and his children, Olivia, Andrew, Joshua, and Kaitlyn; daughter Christine (Daniel Loberg) and their children, Evan, Abigail, Sarah, and Jude; his mother Patricia Hagerman; brother Bruce (Denice) Hagerman; sister Katherine Howg; as well as many nieces and nephews.

David was predeceased by his father Robert Hagerman; his brother John Hagerman; his cherished daughter in-law Lena (nee Wiebe) Hagerman; as well as brother in-law Milton Howg.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at 2:00pm, at the Throness Family Farm by LaGlace, AB. (733006 Range Rd. 80).

Memorial Donations may be made to the David Thompson Bible Camp (Box 2455, Fairview, AB, T0H 1L0).

Dear Gwen & Family. My sincere condolences on the loss of your Husband, Father and Grandfather. To say that David was a great man, in an understatement. He was always kind, sincere and motivated by the love of God. I had many conversations with David. A few come to mind but one has always stayed with me. On a particular bad day at work, and after being yelled at by a customer, David said to me "give them grace, as you don't know what is going on in their life, to cause them to act as they did". I have always remembered that advise since then. My prayers are with you all! Rae-Anne

We have many fond memories when our families attended Rolla Baptist Church together in the 80's. We had many times of fellowship and sharing as we raised our small children. Gwen, both you and David exemplified your love for the Lord in using your gifts of hospitality, warm friendship and acceptance of all. It's a pleasure to know such a dedicated family - keep the faith. Well done faithful servants. With love and prayers Greg & Colleen Sumner
