Obituary For Donald Michael Francis Hunt
Donald Michael Francis Hunt of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at UofA Hospital in Edmonton, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born August 7, 1957 in Yorkton, SK. He went to school in Preeceville, SK and graduated from Sturgis Composite High School in 1975. He then went on to acquire his diploma in Paramedics from SAIT, and took training in Vermillion to become a Firefighter. Don then decided to take nursing and received his diploma at Keyano College. He was Deputy Chief at Fort McMurray Fire Department. After this, he went to Royal Roads University to obtain his MALT – Master of Arts in Leadership Training. He worked in many positions as a Regional Director, Executive Director, and Director of Patient Care at the QEII Hospital where he was employed at the time of his passing. His heart and soul was always in health care.
Don wore a smile that would brighten any room and was amazingly quick at making long lasting friends in any situation. He was always the first to offer a hand, ear, or a shoulder to anyone in need. He filled the world around him with compassion and love. He was very proud of his work and approached every workday with strength and purpose. Above all, he loved his sons and family more than anything.

We are sorry that we will be unable to attend Don's service as we will be away. Your Dad was an excellent leader at the QE 11 for many years, and will be missed by many.

Certainly a person called before his time. Don was always good for a chat and enjoyed the family updates. We were able to catch up the last time he came to Ontario for a family reunion and it was so nice to see him. Sadly missed and loved dearly by his family.

I had the honor and privilege of working with Don on many provincial and national EMS committees. He always brought a curious highly intelligent mind, generosity in spirit, humor, a razor-sharp wit along with incredible commitment and professionalism. Don is truly a giant in the EMS community many of the advancements and care practices in Alberta and across Canada have Donâ??s finger prints on them. The work he did as the leader of Grande Prairie EMS was leading edge and he left a legacy that has positively impacted many patients lives. Don was a very kind, special and amazing person he meant so much to so many people I will miss him dearly. To Donâ??s family and close friends my deepest sympathies may your memories of him sustain you in these difficult times.

Dears Family, Friends and Colleagues of Don I worked with Don for several years as co-director at QEII, and he was a great colleague and friend. The news of Donâ??s sudden passing has left me with a deep feeling of sadness and loss. Don had a very engaging personality, and he quickly won over people with his charisma, his witticisms, and his passion for healthcare. Don had ability to liven up even the most ordinary of meetings with his humor and stories. Don I would say was an â??excellent communicatorâ?? and he was rarely short for words. I can only recall one time when he was truly speechless. Almost 10 years ago, there was a Greyhound bus crash near the Smoky River, and in the early morning the hospital was put on alert that we would be receiving patients. So our team began making preparations and plans to accept the patients from the accident. At one point Don answered a call from the field paramedic team at the crash scene. Don, choking back a tear informed us that among victims a baby had died, and then silence. Even though Don had worked many years in healthcare he never lost the heart and the caring for those in need. Don, as my colleague, I learned from your example, and your experience. As my friend I will miss listening to your stories and your passion for life. God Bless

I met Don about 10 years ago. I was looking to move forward in my career. Since that time, Don was a mentor, a guide, and a true friend inside and outside of work. We'd talk for hours about work, life, and all things in the middle. To sum don up, or at least my relationship with him, he'd always say, "Michael... buddy... what can I do to make you shine" My heart hurts for my own loss, I can't imagine yours. A larger than life personality with a desire to know everyone individually. I will miss Don dearly
