Obituary For Doris May Giesbrecht
It is with heavy hearts and much love that we announce the passing of Doris May Giesbrecht, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at the Grande Prairie Care Center, at the age of 102 years.
Doris was born April 14, 1920, in Bezanson, AB, to Charles and Charlotte Stewart. She was raised in Bezanson where she went to school on a farm with her sister Clara, and brothers Bud and Chuck. Doris married Martin Giesbrecht on November 21, 1941, and moved to DeBolt, AB, where they had four children: Gary, Wayne, Ann, and Norma. The family farmed in DeBolt until September 1970, when Martin suddenly passed. Doris then moved to Dawson Creek, BC, where she got a job as a nanny for Steve and Lynda Mizeri.
Doris loved to travel; she visited Hawaii, the Florida Keys, Nashville, Yukon, went on a cruise to Alaska, and took the Boler trailer through the BC mountains to the hot springs with her best friend Marion White.
Doris loved to play crib, bingo, and rummy tiles. She always had a word search on the go and always had a puzzle to do. She loved to knit newborn hats for babies at the hospital.
Doris will be missed by her children: Wayne (Elsie), Ann (Don), and Norma (Neil); grandchildren: Keith, Ken (Karen), Susan (Blayne), Carrie (Ross), Edi, Charlie (Catherine), Melodee (Shane), Korie (Ed), Rita, Lance (Christina), Dorion, and Kaitlyn; great-grandchildren: Keifer, Kenton, Kenny, Kiersten, Taryn, Anysa, Nicholas, Alexandria, Jordan, Odin, Drake, Hailey, and Michael; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Doris was predeceased by her husband Martin; son Gary; daughter in-law Marie; sons in-law Walter and Dick; as well as her grandson David.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at 11:00am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Luncheon to follow. Interment to follow at Glen Lesley Cemetery.
A Livestream of the service will be accessible 15 minutes prior to the service on Doris' obituary on Oliver’s Funeral Home website.
The family would like to thank many friends and family for their love and support during this difficult time. A special thanks to Heritage Lodge and the Grande Prairie Care Center for all their wonderful care they provided to Doris. As well as a special thanks to Oliver’s Funeral Home.
Memorial Donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society AB/NWT Division in Doris's memory (200, 325 Manning Road NW, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5).

My Aunt Doris was the last of a special generation, forged in the Depression on a homestead that required lots of hard work . In the small community of Bezanson, life long friendships were made. I especially cherish taking my dad, Bud, up to meet her in 2014. They looked at the pioneer cairn which included rocks from the homestead of their parents and grandparents. Then a visit to the log house where they spent most of their childhood. Rest in peace Aunt Doris.
