Obituary For Dorothy May Funnell Ireland

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Dorothy May Ireland (nee Funnell) on Monday, April 3, 2017, at the age of 82 years, one month short of her 83rd birthday.

Dorothy was very passionate about her involvement with the Grande Prairie and District Old Timers’ Association over the years and was very proud to be involved with their Scholarship Program.

Dorothy loved to talk about the good old days, enjoyed spending time in her garden, and loved to knit and crochet for her family. We spent many memorable hours in the blueberry patch with mum, and we will miss her dearly.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Leslie (Ken) Shaw, Stuart (Bonnie) Ireland, Lisa (Camille) Lagace, Mark (Kathy) Ireland, and Rex (Cora-Lee) Ireland; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, sister Gwen (Ewart) Loucks, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents: Thomas Funnell and Ethel Funnell (nee Bastin); sisters: Betty Haiste and Mary Marcy; and her husband Guy Ireland.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at 11:00am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). A Lunch will follow.

Memorial donations may be made to the Grande Prairie and District Old Timers’ Association, Scholarship Fund (Box 21028, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 6W7).

I have loving found memories of my Aunt Dorothy, having gone with Mum to visit often. Having tea and a meal in the warm kitchen. Never a dull moment. My Mum and I and my 2 children stayed for a week holiday. Got to enjoy the overabundance garden of veggies and admiring her beautiful flowers. Looking at family photos. I will treasure my childhood and adult memories and carry them in my heart. Long phone calls talking about the past and present... Love you Aunty Dorothy and may peace be with you. I have always enjoyed Dorothy's wisdom and her love of the history of the OldTimers Association. In her quiet way should could recall so much valuable information and she always worked for accuracy and fairness for everyone. I just had a visit with her at the annual banquet a few short weeks ago and she seemed in good form. Her legacy will continue through the good work of the current Oldtimer's executive but she will for sure be missed!
