Obituary For Dwain "Mickey" Arthur Smith

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mickey Smith, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Valleyview, Fairview and Spirit River, AB. Mickey passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the age of 76 years.

Mickey was born in Meadow Lake, SK, on March 6, 1947, to Alvin and Thelma Smith. He was the youngest of four children. They moved to Valleyview, AB, in 1951. In his adulthood, Mickey worked on the rigs around Fort St. John, BC, where he met Audrey Berranger. They were married in Fort St. John on June 27, 1970, and moved to Little Smoky, AB, then to Edson, AB, in 1972. In 1975, they bought the family farm in Valleyview and started their oilfield business and along came their son, Billy.

Eventually they moved to Fairview, AB, in 1999, and bought an acreage on the beautiful Dunvegan where they lived for over 20 years. From there they moved to Spirit River, AB, and resided there for 5 years. He loved going to The Happy Hour Club, where the seniors played cards and bingo, and they made many new friends. In 2022, Mickey and Audrey decided to move to an apartment in Grande Prairie, AB.

Mickey loved RVing and boating with his wife, son, grandchildren and his sweet little great-granddaughter. He enjoyed teaching his son and grandkids to fish, waterski, and go tubing. He would have a good laugh when they fell off the tube or skis and would be overjoyed when they caught a fish. He so enjoyed their trip across Canada with their truck and 5th wheel; that was his preferred way to travel, and he was always on the move.

Mickey was always there for friends and neighbours; and would help when and however he could. Mickey joined the AA program and through the rest of his years felt an obligation to pay it forward. His way of doing that was to donate many hours over the years helping others, both in the program and out. He was a true inspiration to our family.

Mickey will be sadly missed by his wife Audrey; son Billy; grandchildren Jasmine (Patrick) and Kadin (Rose); as well as great-granddaughter Ember.

He was predeceased by his parents Alvie and Thelma Smith; sisters Iris Clapperton and Sherry (Lou) Masse; brother Dale (Jean) Smith; as well as nieces: Barbara Comeau and Naomi Masse; as well as nephew Ron Comeau.

Interment for Mickey will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at 1:00 PM, at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84 Ave and 112 Street)

Regarding Mickey’s wishes, the family will be having a Celebration of Life at a later date.

Dear Audrey, I'm so sorry to hear of Mickey's passing. We were neighbors of Alvie and Thelma next door to their Valleyview farm and we children all grew up together. My sister, Mae, always gave me news of your family, Audrey, and kept me informed of your moves. Even as a youngster, Mackey was just fun to be around, and from all reports, he was always like that. Sincere sympathy to you and Billy and family, Pearl Fee, Innisfail, AB
