Obituary For Edward Baker
It is with great sadness to announce that Ed Baker of Hythe, Alberta passed away on Friday, July 31, 2015 at the University of Alberta Hospital, at the age of 80 years.
Ed was surrounded by family and went peacefully to join his parents Robert and Alice, brother Charles (Gena), grandson Jason, his eldest son Bob, and his stable of horses that he so enjoyed over his lifetime.
Ed is survived by Elaine, his loving wife of 57 years, sister Gert (Stan), brother Ronald (Sandy), and his three sons: Frank (Shannon) and their children Bradi (Scott) and Dayne (Quinn); Larry (Connie) and their children Dorinda and Nicolas; and Royce (Lisa) and their children Jack, Sam and Luke; his daughter in-law Cheryl and children Desjaray, Breana (Dillon) and Bryler (Aileen). Ed’s legacy continues with 9 great-grandchildren: Trigg, Heath, Nevis, Coye, Ashtin, Daltan, Brooklynn, Logan and Leonardo.
Ed was able to live his whole life between the farm he was born and the farm he built with Elaine. He valued an honest day’s work and the discipline he followed to be a successful certified and registered grain grower. While he retired from farming at the early age of 51, Ed’s retirement life was anything but typical. He raised and trained thoroughbred horses which resulted in Brass Strike competing in the Canadian Derby in 1996. After the thoroughbred phase Ed trained Standardbred horses for teamster competitions well into his 70’s. Ed liked his routine of weekly coffee gatherings, poker nights, and snooker days. He was also very well known in the watch, coin and antique markets for his shrewd negotiating skills. For a private person he accumulated a vast network of friends that stretched all across Canada. The last few years Ed bought and restored estate tractors and turned his basement into a tack shop rebuilding harness and saddles. Ed’s curiosity and sense of humour kept him very vigorous and involved in all that was happening around him. He lived the life he wanted and had no regrets.
The Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 7, 2015 at 10:00am at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). There will also be a reception later that day at the Hythe Golden Age Center at 3:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hythe Athletic Association (Arena) (c/o Box 11, Hythe, AB T0H 2C0).
