Obituary For Elsie Christine Torgerson Hillis

Elsie Christine Hillis (nee Torgerson) passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at the age of 87 years, to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Elsie was born on February 21, 1931, in La Glace, AB to Theodore and Sigrid Torgerson. She was the oldest of six children and grew up in a very loving and welcoming home. She attended school at La Glace and Wembley for her first nine years and then moved with her Grandpa Brekkaas to Grande Prairie to take her grade 10 and 11 at the high school. She then went home to help her mother at their sawmill and completed her grade 12 by correspondence.

Elsie took secretarial courses at the Business College and went on to have a career in the legal system, starting with Mr. Lawlor. After an eighteen-year break to raise a family of five children, Elsie received employment with Charlie MacDonnell and ending with Steve Burgess, retiring in 1993. She always said that it was the perfect profession for her. She loved her job, her co-workers, the clients, and the sense of satisfaction she received from it.

Elsie met and married John “Jack” Hillis on July 14, 1954. They spent their first seven years of married life travelling around the Peace Country, while Jack worked on road construction. In 1961, they settled in a small bungalow on Hillcrest Drive. In 1966, they moved their family of five children to the acreage on Wapiti Road. After Jack passed away in 1997, Elsie moved into Grande Prairie once again.

Elsie spent her final years residing in Mackenzie Place and then the Grande Prairie Care Centre. She was surrounded by loving family until the end. The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the medical personnel for the exceptional care Elsie received.

Elsie leaves to mourn sons: Warren (Audrey), Grant, and Cameron (Monica); daughters: Sandra and Tracey; twelve grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren; brothers: Torger (Mary) Torgerson, and Kenneth (Mabel) Torgerson; sister Carolyn (Dan) Robinson; brothers in-law: Herman Frantzen, and Colin Griffith; and sister in-law Margaret Hillis.

Elsie was predeceased by her parents Theodore and Sigrid Torgerson; husband Jack Hillis; sisters: Christine Frantzen and Valerie Griffith; sisters in-law: Hazel Torgerson, Audrey McLaren, and Beryl McLaren; brothers in-law: Leonard Hillis, and Ross McLaren.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, November 9, 2018, at 1:00pm, at Christian Fellowship Assembly in Grande Prairie (11449 92 St.).

Memorial donations may be made to Christian Fellowship Assembly - Missions (11449 92 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8X 1P4).

To All of Elsie's Dear Family, There are simply no words adequate to describe our appreciation of the life of Elsie Christine Hillis! She made an eternal and total-life-enhancing difference in the lives of "Stephen," Carrie, Michael, Ryan and Kristin Burgess. We will miss her as we know you all are! Our love and comforting thoughts have been coming your way since we heard of her passing, and will do so for many, many days to come. All take care, be well and stay safe! Our family's connection to Elsie began many, many years ago! We were not aware of that until she began working for Stephen and she and I (Carrie) had opportunities for such fun visits and talks many times. I will hear Elsie's special laugh forever. We discovered that Elsie had lived in Wembley for some time years back where she attended some grade school. (A Torgerson connection to the Andersons - sawmilling maybe?) While there she met my Mom (Margaret Taylor Anderson) who worked in the Wembley Department Store. She told me that she and her friends really liked going into the store, partly because my Mom was there. Elsie described her as a young woman always so nicely dressed (Mom loved clothes which the girls admired) with beautiful long, dark, wavy hair (she was Scottish) who was so nice to them when they went in to shop for (usually) treats - ice cream I think. That would have been back in the mid 1940s, long before I was even thought of. Elsie began working with Stephen when he was articling with Charlie M. in 1972/73, (I believe). She asked to go with him when he decided to go out on his own. Stephen considered Elsie more of a partner than an employee, in fact, that is how he considered many of the girls who worked for him, but Elsie was "the one!" He told me many times that during his articling year and beyond he had learned more from Elsie than from any lawyer. If here today, Stephen would tell you that Elsie was just as responsible for the Burgess success in Grande Prairie a

Elsie and I worked together for many years as legal secretaries. Outside of work we were fast friends. A group of 4 of us (Elsie, myself, Gwen Patterson and Margaret Brocklesby, travelled together. Sadly, Gwen and Margaret predeceased both Elsie and I. Elsie and I shared the same birthday - February 21st. She was 16 years older than I, but she was one of my best friends. Bruce and I send our condolences to all of Elsie's children and their families. Rest in Peace Dear Friend. Judi and Bruce Logan

I send thoughts of sincere sympathy. What a woman Elsie was - Kind, classy, witty, and she was a wonderful friend. Mom and Elsie were called 'The Bobbsey Twins' at Pioneer Lodge. Elsie had the gift of gab and a great sense of humour. She was interested in others and in all the happenings around her. She loved her family and she was proud of her roots. Yes, she came from a loving home which gave her a very solid foundation. I envision her in the arms of her Savior and with the loved ones who passed before her.

I apologize, everyone, for not being able to attend Elsie's Celebration of Life. We have freezing rain and the warning continues. Bruce had a total hip replacement this summer and it is so slippery here that Elsie would have pitched a fit if she thought we were going to traverse the icy roads and slippery walking conditions. Please know that we will be thinking of you and praying for all of you when 1 pm arrives this afternoon. Your mother was a very good friend to me over the years. We had a lot of fun together - Elsie, me, Gwen Patterson and Margaret Brocklesby. I will miss your mother dearly! Judi (Logan formerly McLaughlin)
