Obituary For Elsie Gordey

Elsie Gordey, resident of Grande Prairie, formerly of Spirit River, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016, in Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton, at the age of 83 years, with family at her side.

Elsie will be remembered by many whose lives she touched while raising her family, working, volunteering, traveling, and living life to its fullest.

She grew up in Whitburn, AB and later married George Gordey and settled in Spirit River. Elsie was known for her good nature and warm heart. Her home and her kitchen were always open to visitors, old friends and new. Although she devoted her early years to raising her family, as the children grew, Elsie spent some time working outside of the home; first at McLeod’s Department store, then the Spirit River Bakery, and finally alongside George and other family members at the Manning Hotel and Aurora Motel in Manning, AB. Elsie traveled to Edmonton during this period to take a mixology course at NAIT, and then spent countless hours helping with management of the kitchen and dining room where she enjoyed mixing special drinks for the hotel guests.

Elsie was a self-taught cake decorator. She baked and decorated wedding cakes for her children, grandchildren, and many other friends and relatives over the years. Always humble, Elsie received pleasure in doing things for others. She volunteered over 700 hours for the Grande Prairie Public Library and used her creative talent to support the library when they entered Christmas trees in the annual Festival of Trees. Her love of crafts showed up in decorated clothes, Christmas ornaments, and countless household items that shone a little brighter with Elsie’s eye for colour and sparkle.

Elsie loved to travel and spent many joyous days exploring Alaska, Hawaii, BC, the Prairie Provinces, PEI, Nova Scotia, Nashville and Mexico with George, her children, cousin Mary and others. Wherever Elsie went, she made new friends, and often pen pals that she stayed in touch with for years.

Elsie will be sadly missed by her children: Sally (Dave) Parsons, Gary (Donna) Gordey, Marlene (Roy) Dickson, Larry Gordey and Laurie (Tim) Lynch; grandchildren: Nikki (Brock) Stoyko, Keenan (Chelsey) Wiebe, Tikina Gordey (Nick Brownoff) and Kelsey Parsons; sister Anne (Ed) Farnquist; brothers in-law: Ian Bennie and Mike (Mary) Gordey; sister in-law Lena Hunchak; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Elsie was predeceased by her husband George, parents Bill and Mary Solomiany, and sister Nettie Bennie.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 29, 2016 at 11:00am, at the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Parish in Grande Prairie (10315 114 Ave.).

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie and the Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton for their compassionate care of Elsie and the heartfelt, respectful, and dignified manner in which they tended to Elsie’s needs.

In lieu of flowers, Elsie would be best honoured with a donation to the Grande Prairie Public Library (101, 9839 103 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 6M7).

To the Gordey Family, My heart aches for your family. I know that Aunty Elsie was a wonderful women who I admired. I will always have great memories of her. Just like Mom, she was one of the greatest cooks. Grandma taught her girls well. Her house was very welcoming and clean. I remember going into her garden and there were so many beautiful flowers to look at, along with the garden that was like no other. I am very proud to have that generation in my life. They left us with great memories and set a wonderful example of family life. I hope to carry some of Aunty Elsie's traits with me as I travel down lives road. Thank you Aunty Elsie for just being you! I love you and I will miss you. All my love .... Debbie Botham

Saddened to hear of the passing of your mom/grandma. She was such a lovely lady. Remember when the boys would go to her home and Morgan always came home talking about how much fun and how good a cook she was. May the memories bring you comfort in the days ahead. Take care, The Beaupre family
