Obituary For Emil Sopkow

Emil Sopkow, resident of Spirit River, AB, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at the age of 88 years.

Emil was born on November 5, 1935, on the farm in the Ksituan area, to Nicholas and Lina Sopkow. He was the fourth of nine children.

He spent his very early years working on the farm and attending school in Ksituan until grade 8. Many hours were exhausted creating havoc with his brothers and the neighbourhood boys.

After completing school, Emil worked many jobs in the sawmill, trucking, seismic, pipeline, drilling rig, construction, and farming industries. He had many skills and hobbies. Through these adventures, he had many experiences and stories to tell.

Emil had many hobbies that kept him busy throughout the years. He enjoyed working with leather, crafting belts, bracelets, and suspenders. He also enjoyed curing bacon and making homemade sausage. He gifted many of his creations to his family and friends.

He often ventured out to his farm where he liked to tinker with his equipment. He also enjoyed driving in the countryside to visit his neighbours and friends.

Emil will be sadly missed by his siblings: Helen Jones, Mary (Ed) Pierog, John (Gail) Sopkow, Victor (Arlene) Sopkow; sister-in-law Betty Sopkow, and their families and many friends.

Emil was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Lina; brothers: Sidney, Steve and Julian; as well as his sister, Ruth.

The Viewing and Funeral will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, with the viewing beginning at 11:00 am, followed by the service at 12:00 pm, at the Spirit River Centennial Hall (4812 44 Ave).

Interment will follow at the Ksituan Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
