Obituary For Ethel Ellen Hockey

It is with profound sadness that the family of Ethel Ellen Hockey (nee Cameron), announce her peaceful passing, with family by her side, at the Grande Prairie Care Center on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at the age of 90 years.

The Grande Prairie Care Center was home to Ethel for the last year after a minor stroke left her unable to stay in her own home. After a very short illness (complications from developing shingles), she left this world on her own terms. She was blessed to have had a long, healthy, and happy life.

Ethel was born in Grande Prairie, AB, on July 10, 1931, to Malcolm and Elizabeth Cameron, and grew up on the family farm near Wembley, AB. Once out of school Ethel ventured to Edmonton, AB, to pursue a career in nursing but due to her mother falling ill, she had to return home to help with her younger siblings. Shortly after returning home Ethel went to a dance in Beaverlodge, AB, and met Frank Hockey. They were married on March 30, 1954, and went on to raise their three children on the Hockey Homestead located west of Grande Prairie, at the bottom of Richmond Hill. In 1969, the family moved into Grande Prairie and Ethel went to work in the medical field. The first being at the Auxiliary Hospital as a Ward Aide, then transferring to a position as a Unit Clerk on second medical in the Grande Prairie Hospital. Her final position was a Unit Clerk on the Maternity floor of the QEII Hospital until her retirement in June of 1995, when she was inducted into the "Quarter Century Club" of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Through her work, Ethel made many good friends and stayed in touch with them after her retirement, meeting for lunches or coffee.

Ethel loved the springtime because she could hardly wait to plant her flowers. She was the happiest out in her flower beds or creating her flowerpots. Later in the summer, you could find her picking raspberries to make her yummy raspberry jelly and canning peaches then giving them away for her family and friends to enjoy.

Ethel was a kind, caring person and always put others before herself. She would give a helping hand to anyone who needed it. She loved the visits from family and friends whether it was planned or not, and coffee was always on and there was a bread truck full of goodies sitting in the driveway (Frank worked for Weston Bakeries). One of Ethel's greatest joys this past year was becoming a great-grandma to baby Everleigh. She enjoyed all the visits, FaceTimes, and pictures that Gayle would show her on the iPad. Her most recent visit just a week ago was so precious and memorable.

Ethel will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters Gayle Hockey, and Sharon Spacil; her favourite son in-law Wayne Spacil; grandchildren Michelle Spacil and Kyle (Nikki) Spacil; great-granddaughter Everleigh Spacil; auntie Marjorie Parry; sisters in-law: Elsie Cameron, Marg Hockey, and Anne Hockey; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Ethel was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Frank; son Robert Hockey; brothers Donnie Cameron, and Jerry Cameron; sister Louella Watson; parents Malcolm and Elizabeth Cameron; along with many other sisters in-law and brothers in-law.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Grande Prairie Care Center for their dedication and compassionate care of Ethel. The family would also like to thank Dr. Odufuwa for his wonderful care of Ethel for several years.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at 1:30pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

A Livestream of the service will be accessible 15 minutes prior to the service on Ethel’sobituary on Oliver’s Funeral Home website.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation – Neonatal Unit (11205 110 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 4B1).
