Obituary For Florence Ann Kalischuk Mayer

Florence Mayer, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at the QEII Hospital, at the age of 93 years.

Florence was born on September 17, 1926 in Poland. When she was 2, she immigrated to Canada with her parents, Sophie and Filip. She lived in Grande Prairie most of her life and met her husband, Victor, while working at Palace Café. Florence was a longtime employee of Canfor and eventually retired. Retirement years were devoted to gardening and her family, with a little travel here and there.

Florence loved to laugh at a joke, or at life in general. She was adventurous, trying new things like waterslides, trampolines, and most of all, travel. She loved and was proud of her family. She was passionate about gardening, fruit trees, flowers, and knitting.

She will be sadly missed by her children: Charlotte Godin, Arthur (Georgina) Mayer, and Linda (Neil) Millar; grandchildren: Dean Mayer, Shanna (Rob) Arseneault, Tracy (Neil) Fillier, Christian Millar, and Andrew Millar; great-grandchildren: Hannah Mayer, Reyam Arseneault, Sophie Arseneault, Jack Fillier, and James Fillier; siblings: Mary Trombley, George Kalischuk, and Victor (Ruth) Kalischuk; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Florence was predeceased by her husband Victor Mayer; and siblings: Steve Kalischuk, Wally Kalischuk, and Carrie Kalischuk.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2020, at 11:00am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

Memorial donations may be made to Seniors Outreach (101, 10127 121 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 7V3).

Dear Linda and family, So very sorry for the loss of your dear mother. I have fond memories growing up as neighbors with you and your mom was the nicest lady! Please feel my hugs! Tammie Pitman-Belyan

Our deepest condolences to all of Florence's family. We were neighbors across the street for 26 years. Florence was the kindest and funniest lady. We were one of the lucky ones to receive the vegetables from her garden and apples from her trees. We would try to reciprocate with fish from our camping trips. She would come over yelling I need help, which would always worry us, then she would laugh and say I have to many cucumbers or tomatoes and I need help eating them. A few years ago we were the lucky recipients of socks and slippers as well. She loved to come and see our dogs and pet them and at Christmas I took our littlest dog to the lodge for a visit and to drop off some baking but she wasn't in. I never got to see her after she moved but I often think of her. Our neighborhood won't be the same without her.
