Obituary For Garry Wendland
The family of Garry Wendland sadly announces his passing on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 in Spirit River at the age of 76 years.
Garry was born in Grande Prairie on August 26, 1939 to George and Anne Wendland. He grew up and went to school in Peoria. He was always involved with horses and rodeo, and was a familiar face at the Teepee Creek Rodeos.
In 1962, Garry married Barbara Connell and they had 3 sons: Blayne, Wyatt and Marty. They moved to their ranch on the banks of the Smoky River where they raised cattle and horses.
Garry and Barbara separated and he moved to Edmonton to work at the racetrack. It was at the track that he met Pearl Winkel who became his companion for the rest of his life.
Garry was stricken with cancer 9 years ago, but he lived his life fully, right up until the last few months.
He leaves to mourn Pearl, his 3 sons and their families, 2 step-children, 8 grandchildren, as well as 3 sisters and their families.
Garry was predeceased by his mother and father George and Anne, and his sister Betty.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 1:00pm at COCO Hall in Wanham.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Pearl I am sending you huge hugs right now! You did such a great job of caring for Garry right until the end. He loved you so much! Be sad, cry, be angry, do whatever you need to...then go on and live your life and be happy...just the way Garry would want. I'm sorry I can't be at his service but I will be out of the country. Please know I will be thinking of you Lynette

Wyatt and Marty, Most people say it's the daughters that look after their parents but you two did an outstanding job of being there for your Dad. He knew he could always count on you and was so proud of you both! I am proud of the nights you stayed at the hospital, when he was confused, restless and trying to get out of bed. Those are long, hard nights and it's easier to "just let the staff" take care of him but you two proved how much you loved him by staying those nights. I'm sorry I can't be at his service to give you a hug and tell you these words in person. Please know my thoughts are with you Lynette (Homecare nurse)

I always admired Garry's demeanor and horsemanship skills. I think his talent went a bit unappreciated because he wasn't a show-boat. He just quietly went about his business and got the job done. He was a good man, and a good horseman. He was not a quitter or a whiner. I won't make it to his service, but I'm sending my condolences to you all.
