Obituary For Gerald "Jody" Haviland Bain

Gerald “Jody” Haviland Bain of Elmworth AB, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2024, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital at the age of 73.

Gerald was born in Grande Prairie AB on February 20, 1951, to George and Elenor Bain. As a small child they lived in Dimsdale until 1955 when they moved to Valmont BC. Dad had many fond memories of living there even though they only resided there until he was nine years old”. The family moved back to Dimsdale where dad found a love for farming and truck driving. He began driving log trucks at a young age. For years he hauled logs, was always proud of the fact that he never rolled a truck.

Gerald then met Rita Hennig at a dance in Wembley in 1972 and they started dating. They married on July 20th, 1977, and moved out to Elmworth with George and Elenor to start farming together. They raised everything from cereal crops, pigs, cows and sheep. They always had a few horses around, a couple of his favorites were the “old joker horse” Bandit and the jughead Comanche.

On July 7th, 1978, they welcomed their first and only daughter Robin into the world. Followed a couple of years later by the eldest son Aaron who was born on May 13, 1980. By this time mom was very tired of living in the drafty little house they called home. They then started building a new one, and with the help of neighbors, family, and friends they had the house ready to be moved into before the birth of their youngest son Chris, born November 19, 1983.

Dad had many jobs throughout his life, but they always revolved around his two loves: farming and truck driving. Whether it was hauling cows to Picture Butte or trailers from Grande Prairie to Saskatoon or Kamloops he loved to make miles. Additionally, he also worked at Hodges feedlot and for the Sawchuk’s farming grain.

Dad was also up for travelling when he could and I am sure the people in Mexico are still commenting on his white legs to this day.

Gerald is survived by his three children and eight grandchildren. Daughter, Robin (Billy) with grandchildren Hannah and Carson, son Aaron (Nikki) with grandchildren Kaylee, Landen, Emily and George, son Chris (Samantha) with grandchildren Bennett and Claire. As well as sisters Cheryl (Bob) Bain-Mcewen, Donna (Darryl) Mayne, Ellen (Fred) Mc Ausland and brothers Elmer (Lisa) Bain and Brent (Rhonda) Bain. Brother-in-law Howard Hennig, Calvin (Jody) Hennig, Dorothy (Bob) Simpson, Peter (Janet) Hennig, Phil (Daisy) Hennig.

Gerald was predeceased by wife Rita, parents George and Elenor Bain, mother, and father-in-law Sigfried and Anna Hennig, sisters Betty Gubbe and Cindy Arlint, as well as many other extended family members

We toast a warm Lucky lager to you Dad and will miss your words of encouragement like “Swing that hammer don’t push it” or “Barkley you dumb S.O.B. get around the cows the other way”. Hope you got a load of logs to haul with a big horsepower truck, your cows are fat and your saddle horses are easy to catch and Mom is there to keep you in line.

Sorry to read of the passing of Jody, treasure his memory. I met Jody when he and Rita first started dating in 1972, I was her room mate when she and I left our family farms to 'move to the big city'. Many fun times we shared!
