It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gertrude Marie Metz on Friday, November 29, 2024, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre at the age of 97 years.

Gertrude was born on December 25, 1926, in Donnelly, AB. She was the third eldest of eleven children. Her family lived in Falher, AB, until she was six, and at that time they moved to Peace River, AB, then on to Grande Prairie, AB.

Gertrude married the love of her life DeLacy Metz, at the age of 18, on June 5, 1945. They lived in Wanham, AB, for six years to be close to his relatives. They had five children: a son, Wayne; followed by three daughters: Donelda, Darlene, and Carol; and a son, Darrell, to complete their family.

Gertrude was never one to sit still for too long; she was always busy with something. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, knitting, sewing, crocheting, gardening, baking, and camping. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Gertride worked for the Alberta Government Telephone (Telus) for 30 years as a switchboard operator, supervisor, and then in cable repair until she retired on April 22, 1983. She then took a poodle grooming course and spent many hours grooming the furry pets.

She leaves behind to mourn her loving family, her children: Wayne (Deloris) Metz, Darlene (Barry) Chorney, Carol Nilsson, and Darrell Metz; her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother Denis (Geri) Biron; sister Francis (Sandy) Jurak; her sister-in-law Marion Biron; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Gertrude was predeceased by her parents, Rene and Ella Biron; husband DeLacy “Bud” Metz; daughter Donelda Cochrane; grandson James Cochrane; son-in-law Dwight Nilsson; and many of her brothers and sisters.

The family appreciates the compassionate care of Dr. Remo Heugh and all the staff at the Grande Prairie Care Centre.

As per Gertrude’s request, there will be no funeral. She will cremated with a graveside service to be held on, Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 2:30 pm, at the Grande Prairie Cemetery.
