Obituary For Glen MacDonald
Glengarry Alexander MacDonald, of the Woking, Alberta/Spirit River area passed away on Friday May 15, 2015. Glengarry, (aka Glen or G.A.), was born to Donald and Christina MacDonald in Dodsland, Saskatchewan. The family moved to the Peace Country and settled in the Woking area in 1929. Glengarry joined the Army in 1940 and went overseas in 1941. He trained in England and Scotland and served in North Africa, Italy and NW Europe. He was wounded in Italy in 1944. After the war was over in Europe, Glen volunteered for the Pacific and was on leave when the war in the Pacific ended. He served five years as an Engineer in the Infantry with the Royal Canadian Engineers 12th Field Regiment. All five of the children of Donald and Christina MacDonald served in the Armed Forces. The discipline and patriotism Glengarry learned in the Infantry never left him as friends and family will attest. After the war Glengarry returned home and started farming. For many years between seeding and harvest, he worked as a carpenter. Evenings were taken up training and exercising his race horses. The winter season would find Glengarry working in the sawmill. Once Glengarry started raising cattle, the farm was a year round business. Glen left the farm in June 2013 and moved into the Pleasant View Lodge in Spirit River, Alberta. Glen was predeceased by Doreen, his wife of 59 years, his parents Donald and Christina MacDonald, parents-in-law Valt and Gwen Regan, brothers Ernie and Ronald MacDonald, sisters Agnes Scobie and Donalda Tighe, brothers-in-law Mitch Scobie, Jack Tighe and Ken Regan, sister-in-law Helen Walts. Glengarry will be sadly missed by his children: Heather MacDonald, Faye Swanson (Al), and Gary (Kim) MacDonald; Grandchildren: Michelle Bainbridge, Devry Swanson, Glengarry (Holly) MacDonald, Megan (Shaun) Beagan and Brion MacDonald; Great Grandchildren: Jasmine, Damian and Tanaya Bainbridge, Sheridan and Shiloh Swanson, Hope, Gary and Abigail MacDonald, Alexis and Lily Beagan and Cody MacDonald; brothers-in-law Howard (Birgett)Regan and Roy Walts; sisters-in-law Josie MacDonald, Herm Regan and Annie McWhirter; many nieces and nephews; friends and neighbours. Funeral Services will be held at the Spirit River Centenial Hall on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Following the internment services you are invited to share in refreshments with the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #72 Spirit River or a charity of ones choice.
