Obituary For Gordon Gibbs

Gordon Henry (Gord) Gibbs of Grande Prairie, Alberta, passed away at home on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at the age of 57 years.

Gordon was born on March 26, 1959 in Clinton, Ontario. Gordon's parents were in the ministry and moved several times throughout Gordon's time at home, but the place where Gordon considered "home" was Dawson City, YT.

Gordon's personality gave him the aptitude for different employment opportunities through his life, such as selling anything from rusty nails/spikes as a young boy in Dawson City, claiming that they were from Robert Service's cabin, to soap, and fruit, but his favorite job was truck driving. He loved being on the road, seeing different places, people, things and experiences. When he would return home he had a whole lot of new stories to share with his family and friends. If you could sum up Gordon it would be that he loved life to the fullest! He had a passion for always wanting to see what was around the next corner.

Family was the most important thing in the world to him. If you spoke to his friends, Gordon was known for his love of the outdoors, and to his brothers and sisters in the Lord, he’ll be rememebered for his beautiful singing voice. To his family he will be remembered for his unconditional love that he had for them. And to his wife she would say he was full of surprises and definitely never a dull moment.

Gordon's love of the Yukon ran deep and every opportunity to be outdoors he was there, from dog mushing, doing the Percy deWolf mail run, to being a Ranger; taking youth (Whitehorse) from the Group Homes up the Yukon River via canoe to Dawson City; to guiding for McMillan River Outfitters. Gordon would often chaperone one of the kids on school trips along with Fred, our mini daschund.

Reflecting back over the years a lot of memories come to mind, usually with lots of fun packed stories. However one of the fondest memories for his wife was the first time that she met Gordon. It was in early January, and on a Sunday evening at church. He was a guest and sang during the church service. She knew at that precise moment that he was the man she was going to marry.

Gordon suffered with many health issues including diabetes, dialysis three times a week, arthritis, and when the suffering became more than he could bear, God took him home to a place where there is no more pain, and sadness but full of laughter, praises and singing.

Gordon will be deeply missed by his best friend Sandra, partner of 31 years; daughter Renae (Jostein) Hauge and granddaughter Emily and grandson Josiah; son Robert (Suzanne) Tingey and grandson William and granddaughter Samantha; son Cory (Debbie) and granddaughter Sierra; daughter Amanda (Ken) Malchuk and grandson Koda; father Craig Gibbs and his wife Donna; sister Wanda (Irwin) Lennox and their children Jodi (Curtis) Baker and Lincoln, Adrienne (Bobby) Essex, Allison and Nicole Lennox; brother Al (Kerrie) Gibbs and their children Lyndsi, Abi, AJ and Cody; Uncle Gordon and Auntie Sharon Gibbs, Tom and Sue Gibbs and family, Ken and Lesa Gibbs and family; as well as many friends.

He was predeceased by his brother Kenneth Gibbs, Grandma Gibbs, Grandma and Grandpa McLeod, Uncle Alan McLeod, Grandpa Gibbs and his mother Helen Gibbs.

There will be a Funeral Service held on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 3:00pm at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.), with a viewing held prior to the service at 2:00pm.
