Obituary For Gordon John Graydon
Gordon John Graydon, resident of Grande Prairie, Alberta, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the age of 82 years.
Gord was born and raised in Lacombe. After attending SAIT in Calgary, he headed north to Grande Prairie to work for the Alberta Government Telephones. Many of his coworkers there were destined to become lifelong friends. In the early 70’s Gord became a realtor, working for Granco Real Estate. He later took a position as the Executive Director of the Grande Prairie Real Estate Board, holding that position for 10 years.
Gord became an Alderman for the City of Grande Prairie in 1983, serving in that role for 9 years. In 1992, Gord was elected as Mayor of Grande Prairie, a position he held until 2001, when he was elected as MLA for Grande Prairie Wapiti, serving the region for 7 years, including 2 years as the Minister of Gaming. His career held many highlights, including the City of Grande Prairie hosting the Canada Winter Games in 1995, as well as negotiating the purchase of the DeWit building, which would become the site of Grande Prairie City Hall today.
When he was not busy in his numerous roles, Gord enjoyed golfing at the Grande Prairie Country Club. In the early 80’s Gord joined the Grande Prairie Pipes and Drum band, learning how to play the bagpipes. Gord had an amazing green thumb, and his yard was always full of beautiful flowers. Gord and his wife Anne travelled extensively, and spent winters in San Jose Del Cabo, where they made many great memories.
Gord will be sadly missed by his wife Anne, children; Tanya (Mark) Koob, Carson Graydon, Janine (Tim) Saastad and Brett Unger. He is also dearly missed by his grandchildren; Noah Koob, Danielle (Dylan) Seymour, Jenna (Braden) McDonald and Troy Blackburn, as well as great-grandchild Banks McDonald. Gord is also survived by his sisters Kathy Dennis and Maxine Graydon. He was predeceased by his parents and grandson Sam Unger.
Cremation has taken place. In respect of Gord’s wishes, no public service will be held.
