Obituary For Hans Gerd Piepers

It is with great sadness that the family of Hans Gerd Piepers, resident of Grande Prairie, announce his passing on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Points West Hospice, at the age of 81 years.

Gerd (Hans) was born March 10, 1937 in Hüllstede, Germany and raised on a small farm. With only a Grade 9 education, he started apprenticing in a local flour mill in his late teens.

In 1957, he came to Canada on a ship. He worked here as a butcher until returning to Germany in 1958 where he met the love of his life, our mother, Barbel. They were married in early 1959, and then came to Canada later that same year.

Gerd was always a social butterfly who enjoyed people. He was a friend to all and always tried to see the good in people. He was a humble man with a quick wit. He enjoyed fixing bicycles, and building playhouses, and just tinkering around in the garage. You would always see him in the summer months riding his 3-wheel electric bike, which he thoroughly loved.

Gerd will be sadly missed by his wife Barbel Piepers; children Frank (Yvonne) Piepers, Henry Piepers, and Pamela (James) Koyman; sister Chista (Ekkehard) Legner (Germany); brother Dieter (Greta) Piepers (Germany); sister Ulla Adkins; Grandchildren: Norman (Harmony) Piepers, Dennis Piepers, Krystal (Scott) Sydoruk, and Miles Koyman; Great-grandchildren: Nicholas Sydoruk, Piper Sydoruk, Jayden Piepers, Katrina Piepers, Axle Piepers, and Jaxson Piepers; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son Norman Piepers, sister Hanna Grimm, brother Hein Piepers, father Diedrich Piepers, mother Minna Piepers.

A Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018, from 1:00-4:00pm, at the family’s residence in Grande Prairie (11008 96 St.).

Memorial donations may be made to Grande Prairie Hospice Palliative Care Society (Box 21215, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 6W7).
