Obituary For Hans Herbert William Dieckmann

Hans Herbert William Dieckmann, a long-time resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Hans was born on the family homestead in Peers, AB, to Wilhelm Dieckmann and Marta Dieckmann (nee Schebitz). He was the fourth of five children. Hans was only six years old when his father died suddenly in 1945, leaving Hans’ mother to raise five children on her own. They moved from the homestead into the nearby village of Peers that year. In 1946, Hans’ mother bought a small house in Evansburg, AB.

Even as a child Hans was never idle. He was always happily whistling while he worked or tinkered on something. Hans always loved fishing; he often would sneak away to go fishing. He would return home hours later with a line of fish on a stick, feeling quite proud of himself.

Hans started working for the Alberta Government Department of Highways in 1957, at the age of 19. This was with the Bridge branch. Hans worked his way up to Master Bridge Builder in 1965, eventually retiring in this position in 1994. He didn’t remain retired for very long though. Not one to be idle, refuse a challenge or a generous monetary offer from the Alberta North Highway Services, he became a consultant for their Bridge Building/Maintenance crews, for several more years.

Hans married Marjory (Marj) Ellen Kidner on May 19, 1962. They welcomed four children into their family.

Hans loved to be outdoors fishing, hunting, camping or bridge building. There are many amusing stories that he would tell everyone, about his outings and adventures.

Left to mourn the loss of Hans is his wife of 62 years, Marj; daughter Sandra; son Kevin (Mavis); daughter Lenette (Tim); daughter Shaynna; and two grandsons, Anthony and Kevin.

Hans was predeceased by his parents, Wilhelm and Marta Dieckmann; sister Hattie McMillan; and brothers Bill, Fritz and Herb Dieckmann.

In accordance with Hans’ wishes, his family, friends and colleagues are encouraged to celebrate his life by laughing often, sharing stories in his honour and memory, or taking a walk by a river or lake, and catching a fish or two.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinsons Association of Alberta (https://www.parkinsonassociation.ca).
