Obituary For Harold Irving Dick

Harold Irving Dick, resident of Grande Prairie, formerly of Peoria and Wanham area, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at the University of Alberta Hospital, in Edmonton, at the age of 88 years.

Harold was born in Beiseker, AB on September 26, 1928. At the age of 7, his family moved to homestead in Peoria in the Peace River country. In 1949, Harold married Elaine MacDonald, the local school marm, and they gradually built a successful mixed farm where they remained for the next 55 years.

During his years on the farm, he thrived on the land raising grain, cattle and other animals as he loved nature and raising his family with the farm way of life.

He believed in hard work, paying for things in cash, and helping others. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t fix, often with few resources. He loved the outdoors: hunting, fishing, camping, trapping and made many a call behind home plate.

After retirement he enjoyed watching the “Blue Jays” and “Oilers”, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren.

Harold will be sadly missed by his wife Elaine of 67 years of Grande Prairie; children: Wayne (Gail) of Sturgeon County, Barry (Linda) of Calgary, Laurie (Glen) of St. Albert, and Greg (Shari) of Nelson, BC; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous family and friends. He is survived by his sister Lavina Huether of Grande Prairie, brother Harvey (Connie) Dick of Lacombe, brother Richard (Lacy) Dick of Kelowna, and brother in-law Bob (Ellen) MacDonald of Leduc.

He was predeceased by his parents John and Helen Dick of Peoria, sister in-law Eileen MacDonald of Cold Lake and brother in-law Alvin Huether of Heart Valley.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, January 30, 2017, at 1:00pm, at the Jackpot Grill Conference Room in Grande Prairie (10904 92 Ave.). Viewing will be held prior to the service. Cremation and Interment to take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (c/o University Hospital Foundation) (1H1.91 WMC, 8440 112 St. NW, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2B7) The Salvation Army (9618 101A Ave. NW, Edmonton, AB, T5H 0C7), or to a charity of one’s choice.

Hello to all, Harold you were definitely our Idol when you and Elaine lived here in the small Hamlet of Wanham. If you needed help with something Harold was there to lend a helping hand with a big smile on his face. Harold believed in hard work, family, friends, and honesty! Peter and I were talking last night - just one of those people you meet whom you think will always be here - so naturally it was very shocking to hear of his passing. Big hugs to all - they don't make those kind of men any more! Please accept our sincere condolences. Peter and Cathy

Elaine, we were shocked and saddened by Harold's passing. He was a friend and mentor to us and Bob quotes him often. Bob remembers Harold telling him to always pay your big bills first, especially your mortgage and realize that your kids become adults and make their own decisions. We will never forget all the help you both gave us and Harold helping Bob catch our run away cows and accepting us as green as we were. He was a wonderful friend and we will miss him. We will be thinking of you and Laurie, Wayne, Barry, and Greg in the days ahead. Bob and Linda
