Obituary For Hazel Dorothy Bloomfield

Hazel Dorothy Bloomfield, longtime resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away quietly and peacefully on Thursday, September 29, 2022, at the age of 99 years.

Hazel was born August 13, 1923, in Calgary, AB. Active and athletic in her youth, she would often tell stories of playing baseball, riding horses, and how much she loved growing up in the early pioneering days of Calgary. In her late teens, she met and married the love of her life, Gordon, and the two of them embarked on a journey together that lasted over 70 years. In 1955, they moved their young family to Grande Prairie to start a construction business along with Hazel’s brother, Jack.

Hazel was an avid and relentless volunteer throughout her life. She could always be found serving others in some form. Along with many other organizations, Hazel was involved with the QEII Hospital Auxiliary for decades, St. Paul’s United Church, Meals on Wheels, Grande Prairie Dream Home Lottery, Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club, and worked countless bingos, casinos, raffles, and events raising money for the community.

She was known for her beautiful gardens and attended to her flowers with great care. Also of note was her baking and cooking. The amount of food in the Bloomfield home during the holidays was the stuff of legends.

Grandma left behind a loving family, children: Brian Bloomfield, and Kerry (Brent) King; six grandchildren: Lloyd, Raymond, and Hudson Bloomfield, Jason Lainchbury, Erin Ley, and Andrea Hart. She was a doting “Nana” to seven great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren. There are numerous nieces and nephews that loved and will miss her as well.

Grandma is now reunited with her loving husband Gordon whom she missed so dearly these last ten years.

Special thanks to the nurses and attendants that took special care of Grandma at Prairie Lake Seniors Community.

There will be no funeral at this time.

If you wish to make a donation in Hazel’s memory, it can be made to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation (11205 110 St. Grande Prairie, Alberta, T8V 4B1).

Auntie Hazel was a very special person to us and also a second mother to Terry. One the memories was when she came to our fly in resort and her and I baked and cooked together and she loved it when the fishermen just loved her food. She was a wonderful aunt and we will miss her Terry and June Benesh

My favorite memory is a dinner , for a birthday she was having, and she and I ended up holding hands...deep breathing...and, almost whispering 'namaste'....it was a peaceful sharing that was needed just then....rest is peace, Hazel.
