Obituary For Herbert "Herb" Howard Griffiths

Herb Griffiths, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Sexsmith, AB, passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at the age of 98 years.

Herb was born on June 16, 1925, in Grande Prairie, to parents George and Gwendoline Griffiths. He was raised on the family farm in Sexsmith. At the age of 15, due to his father’s failing health, he had to quit school and take the lead on the farm. Although, he only had a grade 8 education, he was a very successful farmer and businessman. Herb’s career included farming and part owner of a John Deere Dealership.

Herb was very conscientious and committed. He cared for his family, friends, and community. Over the years, Herb supported the Sexsmith School Board, Alberta Curling, and the Sexsmith Community by volunteering and serving.

Herb will be sadly missed by his wife Louise (nee Greentree); stepchildren: Richard (Suzanna) Hanham, Rob (Beth) Hanham, Martha (Rick) Sirockman, and Reg (Carrie) Hanham; grandchildren: Pete, Renee, Shauna, Sheri, Freddy, Dallace, Alec, and Errol; the many great-grandchildren of Papa Herb; as well as special friends the Anderson Family of Sexsmith.

Herb was predeceased by his first wife Idamay; son Howard; as well as parents George and Gwendoline.

A special thank you to the Grande Prairie Care Centre staff, and Dr. Armstrong for their compassionate care. We also would like to thank the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Emergency Department for their care and compassion during Herb’s final hours.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 2:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

Memorial Donations may be made to the Howard Griffiths Memorial Student Award Fund (https://cfna.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=1270).
