Obituary For Herman Paschetag

Herman John Paschetag passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at the age of 71 years.

Herman was born February 28, 1945 in Grande Prairie, AB. He attended school at Morningview, Sexsmith, Clairmont, Grande Prairie, and the Fairview Agricultural College with honours (2 years). He farmed 4 quarters on Kleskun Lake until 1979, then 6 quarters SE of Wembley (grain, oil seed, and beef) until retiring 2 years ago.

Herman is survived by his sister Dorothy A. (Bob) Ireland of Parksville, BC, brother Patrick (Patricia) Conrad of Sardis, BC, one nephew and four nieces with two spouses and six little children who live in Calgary, AB, Idaho, Oregon and Texas.

He was predeceased by his mother Victoria (Paschetag) Conrad, father Fred Paschetag and step-father Harlie H. Conrad.

Herman will be remembered for his kind and generous demeanor, intense work ethic, and as a master farmer. He was very proud of the bumper crops he grew. He was greatly loved by family and friends and will be dearly missed.

The family wished to thank the intensive care teams at QEII and U of A Hospitals for their valiant efforts. We are also very grateful for Ken Lawrence, Herman’s best friend and Andy Hofer of the Bear Lake Hutterite Colony for their assistance at this difficult time.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at 10:30am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Interment to follow at Grande Prairie Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the SPCA would be greatly appreciated (12220 104 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 8A8).

I first met Herman in 1993 through my friend Kerry Chmilar. We met again in 2010 when Herman hosted a New Year's Eve Party. Herman was a caring generous man who was passionate about farming. He was an excellent steward of his land and loving caregiver to his livestock and his pets. He would watch carefully over his cattle and be there for the birth of a baby calf. Herman's connection to his land and animals was spiritual. He had a wonderful sense of humour and I am so sorry I did not get west again to visit him since 2012 when we last met. He was an great neighbour and friend to those around him. Herman was a kind and gentle man who leaves behind giant footprints on the land. sincerely Brenda Siemon

Herman will be greatly missed around our neighborhood as he was an excellent farmer and caretaker of the land. He will be especially missed by his animals, pet cat and the 50 to 75 Sharp Tail Grouse which he carefully fed canola oil seed to every morning at sunrise all winter long. He was a man of his ways and when his path was determined he never strayed from it and followed it to his goal. Condolences to his family left behind and rest in peace Herman Sincerely your neighbor Brian & Norma Lank

Austin remembers staying with Herman so many years ago and BBQ'ing steak and eating homemade bread. The bonds of cousinhood were strong during times of need and as we all grow older the bonds decrease in our busy lives. Herman had a heart of gold, a love of farming, a love of animals and a love of sharing his knowledge. He will be missed.

I was so very sorry to hear about Hermanâ??s death. We have always lived in cities far away, yet I know Herman as sincere, peaceable and hard-working; a man who gives much and takes little â?? all such honorable characteristics. During those hectic times of my life that occasionally passed by, I would get my bearings by thinking on the Psalm â??the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peaceâ??, and then think of Herman diligently working his farm and quietly enjoying the peace that the soul finds with wide stretches of land and a moment connected with the creation. The thought was always comforting. I believe with all my heart that even now Herman is resting in an even greater peace, and that is comforting at this time, too. Condolences to Dorothy, Patrick and the folks in his community that he left behind. Love, Matthew & Ava, Samuel, Wyatt and Phoebe

You remind us of driving the truck around the farm, pulling our sleeping bags over our heads to escape the mosquitos, chasing cows, sitting on your knee driving the tractorâ?¦. and of how you raised our father, and probably taught him how to work from dawn till dusk or scarf down a meal in 2 minutes. When we think of you, Herman, we see the same goofy grin and giggle, same love for and baby talk to animals, and the same generosity and selfless demeanor of our father. We love and miss you, and will always remember you through shared memories and as a truly devoted older brother to our father.

I thought Herman was a great guy, very friendly and upbeat, interested in chatting about everything, a good host - I remember he put the Crown Royal bottle on the kitchen table at noon when we were up at the farm although he didn't seem to drink much himself. I am deeply saddened, wish we had been able to see more of him. Len and Anne
