Obituary For Ida Jane Ross

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ida Jane Ross on Friday, April 4, 2025. Aunt Ida to her family, a long-time resident of Grande Prairie, Alberta and Prairie Lake Senior’s Community left us at the age of 82 years.

Ida Jane Ross was born on November 24, 1942, in Sexsmith, Alberta, to Mike and Christina Ross, the youngest of five children. The family lived in Sexsmith before moving to Rycroft where her father, brothers and brother-in-law built and opened MR Motors. It was a mechanic shop, a Ford and Massey Ferguson dealership, and also served as the Greyhound Bus Depot. As a young woman, Ida did the books for the business for several years. When her mother passed away in 1968, her father sold the business, and they moved to Grande Prairie. They lived in the Lord Robert apartment until he passed away in 1986. Ida faced many challenges, but with support from the community, a few good friends and many family members she lived independently. Eventually, she moved into Pioneer Lodge followed by Mackenzie Place, and finally to Prairie Lake Senior Community where she resided for the past three years.

Ida enjoyed crafts, particularly crocheting, and created many lovely articles such as tablecloths, afghans, doilies and dishcloths, which she liked to give away as gifts to special people. Ida never forgot a birthday and was always early with her cards. She had a list of pen pals to whom she wrote countless letters over the years. Ida loved the musical entertainment presented by the facilities where she lived and never missed a recreation activity when she was able. She also looked forward to having her hair done every week.

Everyone loved her happy smile!

Special thanks goes’ out to the many community and health care workers who supported Ida through the years, including City of GP Home Support staff, Grande Spirit Foundation, AHS Home Care Rehab staff, nurses and Healthcare Aides, Mackenzie Place staff, Prairie Lake O’Brien staff, Recreation Therapy at each facility, her hair stylists Glenda and Jane, and Doctors Afridi and Brown who cared for her over the years. Your kindness and support have been greatly appreciated by Ida and her family.

Ida was predeceased by her parents Mike and Christina Ross, siblings: Sarah Britton, Jack Ross, Edith Gitzel, Cliff Ross, and their spouses. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

At Ida’s request, there will be no service. Ida will be laid to rest with her parents at the Grande Prairie Cemetery. Donations in memory of Ida can be made to Stars Air Ambulance, one of her favorite charities. www.stars.ca
