Obituary For Iris Blanche Bolin Rockarts
Iris Blanche Rockarts, resident of Clairmont, passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie, at the age of 93 years.
Iris was born in Rio Grande to Blanche and Ivor Bolin on April 10, 1924, followed by 2 brothers: Sonny and Eric, and 2 sisters: Edna and Mae (now 91 years).
Over her life time, she saw many changes. She rode a horse to school and to many dances. After finishing high school, Iris attended business college, then worked at a government office in Pouce Coupe at the beginning of the war.
Imagine her surprise when a telegraph note arrived from Clarence, her fiancé: “Four days leave. Can arrange wedding.” They went to Victoria where Clarence left on a goodwill tour to Central and South America while Iris worked in a business office.
After the war, Clarence and Iris came to Clairmont to their farm. They used horses, binders, and threshing machines. Later they used tractors, swathers and combines.
Her friendliness resulted in being known as “Grandma” or “Mom” to many friends and neighbors. Clarence and Iris joined the Clairmont United Church in 1949.
Iris had many interests: the community, gardening, flowers, but most of all her family. She delighted in visits from her children: Linda (Edward) Sodergren, Danny Rockarts, and Rodney (Frances) Rockarts; grandchildren: Rocky (Courtney) Sodergren, Angela (David) Little, Trevor (Jessica) Sodergren, Steven (Liz) Rockarts, Heather (Trevor) Buchanan, Jesse (Crystal) Rockarts, and Matthew Rockarts; great-grandchildren: Rory, Chloe, Katelyn, Gabrielle, Claire, Oliver, and Brady. She will be very sadly missed by many nieces and nephews, family, special friends, and neighbours.
She was predeceased by her husband Clarence, son Daniel, brothers Sonny and Eric; and sister Edna.
A Service celebrating her life will be held Tuesday, July 4, at 11:30am, at Clairmont United Church (9915 100 Ave. Clairmont, AB) with interment at Emerson Trail Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at Clairmont United Church (9915 100 Ave., Clairmont, AB).
Memorial donations may be made to Clairmont United Church (9915 100 Ave., Clairmont, AB, T0H 0W0).

Seeing the picture of Iris and reading her obituary, as sad as it was, brought a flood of wonderful memories. Iris was very much Second Mother to a young, single Cape Breton lad so far from home! Upon my arrival in Clairmont I was taken immediately to see Iris and Clarence at what became my second home. Iris very soon became my confidant, my comforter, and a great source of strength. On day two, she took me in the car and drove me all over that ridiculously massive pastoral charge: to Hythe, Valhalla, Sexsmith and, of course, Clairmont. We stopped here and there to meet some of the folks with whom I would be working and to see the church in Hythe as, by then, the Sexsmith Church was no longer in use. In the three years of my stay in Alberta, Iris and I spent many happy hours together. We worked together producing the Annual Report (the first one containing cartoons!), making plans for various church functions, and stealing time from farm and church to just sit and chat. and, I admit, my feet were under her table more than they were anyone else's. I could tell so many stories of Iris and Clarence and their love and hospitality. But at the centre of it all was Iris's devotion to her church and the fact that here was a woman who put action to her words of commitment. I think often of those days in Alberta and my thoughts inevitable take me to the dining room with Iria and Clarence. she has blessed me and my memories of her continue to do so. Rev. Eric Lynk (Minister at Hythe and Clairmont 1980 - 1983).
