Obituary For Jacob "Jake" Jan Meyaard

Jacob “Jake” Jan Meyaard, a resident of Clairmont, AB, formerly of Woking, AB and beloved husband of Shirley Meyaard, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital at the age of 86 years.

Jake was born January 20, 1938 in Hoorn, Holland to Jan and Jakomina Meijaard and was the youngest of ten children. Even as a youngster he had a mind of his own and was involved in lots of mischief. One of his fondest childhood memories was when he received a chocolate bar from a Canadian soldier after Holland was liberated by Canadians at the end of the Second World War.

At the age of 17, he followed his dream and immigrated to Canada to meet up with his brother John in Ontario. After a couple of years, he headed West, working his way across Canada ending up in Hines Creek, AB, where he met the love of his life Shirley Finley. They were married on April 29, 1960, and then went homesteading in Cleardale, AB where he fulfilled his dream of becoming a farmer/rancher. They were blessed with five children while in Cleardale.

In 1980 they sold the homestead and moved to Woking and continued farming, until moving to Clairmont in 2020.

Jake had an immense love for horses and enjoyed anything that involved them. Some of his hobbies were woodworking, building sleighs, buggies and wagons. He then took up golf in his 60’s.

Jake will be sadly missed by his wife Shirley of 64 years; children: Patricia Coates, Jeff (Trina) Meyaard, Jim (Amber) Meyaard, Tracy (Dave) Jorgensen and Teresa Meyaard; grandchildren: Justin, Quinten(Cori), Joel(Krista), Jason, Kaylin(Matt), Meagan, Trent(Charity), Keaton(Tatum) and Avery; as well as great-grandchildren: Kail, Audrey, Charlie, Carter, Maggie, Rosie, Layton, Lucy, Lainey, Ila and Katija.

Jake was predeceased by his parents and all nine siblings.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jim Pope for his friendship, kindness and care. A special thanks to all the staff in Unit 12 at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 18, 2024 at 2:00pm at Oliver’s Funeral Home (10005 107 Ave.), Grande Prairie, AB. Interment will be at Hinterland Cemetery, Hines Creek, at a later date.

Memorial donations can be made to PARDS (pards.ca – ways to give) Grande Prairie or a charity of your choice.

A Livestream of the Service will be accessible prior to the service on Jake Meyaard's obituary on Oliver's Funeral Home website.

Pictures and words cannot begin to describe the feel and thrill of driving your first John Deere tractor. It was the summer of 1975 and I was 13 years old and we got to go out west and see Uncle Jake and aunt Shirley : Uncle Jake took me out to a section of his land and showed me how to drive the big John Deere , he said I'll pick you up in 5 hours. ! Many John Deere tractors under my belt now but I always remember Uncle Jake and the first ride . Uncle Jake and Aunt Shirley took me on an overnight cattle drive. Wonderful memories. My mom was Uncle Jake's oldest sister and she spoke so wonderfully of her little brother. He will be missed. Nephew. Adrian Rehorst

My Condolences to Shirley and the whole Family. It has and always will be with fondness and a smile on my face that I remember Jake. Dad Meyaard to some of our ramshackle crew of saddle club kids 4 plus decades ago. I admired his directness and great sense of humour. He loved a good practice joke and could take one too. And, if the moon was at the right angle, he was known to sing a little opera by a campfire. I am happy to have been in his company in this life. So long Jake.

My heartfelt sympathy to Shirley and family on Jake's passing. There's no greater blessing than to leave this world being remembered as a good man. I have warm memories of his laughter and zest for life. RIP Jake. 🙏

It is with sadness that I have hear about the passing of my most favorite uncle Jake. Just one of the very fond memories of my time with him. I was about 8 or 9 years old. Riding on the swather in the alfalfa field. Dad pulled the car up on the side of the road, about 500 feet away, and honked the horn. Aww, I gues it's time to go home. Jake let me off the swather, and I had to make a run to the fece. Alfalfa was about up to armpits and I'm shure I tripped up a few times. I'm shure there was a chuckle coming from both dad and Jake. That's just one of the very fond memories of my time spent with uncle Jake. He will be missed. Randy Genereux.

My condolences to the Meyaard family. As a teenager in the late 70s I got to know Jake through saddle clubs and rodeos in the Peace country. I always thought Jake was so much fun to be around. He was a skilled cowboy and I so enjoyed his mischievous sense of humour. Those days of being around campfires with stories and song are so fondly remembered. I very much enjoyed his book, From Wooden Shoes to Cowboy Boots. Such an accomplishment, I was so thrilled to hear his voice leap off the printed page. I spoke to him on the phone after finishing his book and could hear the pride he felt in being a publisher author. Goodby Jake you were a well loved and respected character.

My most recent and possibly fondest memory of Jake was last summer singing and playing guitar around the "camp fire". We had gone camping out in Bezanson. What a beautiful evening. I will forever miss your hugs Jake. Alway, "Rosie"

I have had the honor of associating with Jake multiple times in my life time. I thoroughly enjoyed the autobiography he wrote. I met Jake through his son Jeff. Jeff, Trina and family have been very good friends to myself, my wife Tammy and my family for the past 29 years. Sons are a reflection of their Fathers. If this is true, Jake was a very good man, instilling wisdom and love into his family. Our condolences to all the Meyaard family. May God bless and comfort you during this time. Aaron and Tammy Brown
