Obituary For Janet Alvina Halvorson Roy

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Janet Alvina Roy, resident of Sexsmith, AB, on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at the QEII Hospital, after a short battle with lung cancer, at the age of 69 years.

Janet was born on July 31, 1951, in Fairview, AB. She married Phil Roy in 1971. They resided in Edmonton, AB, until moving north to Sexsmith in 1975. She was raised in the United Church but has enjoyed attending the People’s Church in Grande Prairie. She has always retained a strong belief in God.

She became an insurance agent and worked at Sexsmith Insurance for 8 years. She then went on to work for Wild Rose Seeds, and Peace River Seed Co-op for 26 years as a seed trader.

She will be remembered for her good nature, helping hand, sense of humour, and love she had for her family. She was a very caring wife, mother, grandmother, friend, artist, and pet owner. One of her greatest passions was painting with acrylics, and Janet belonged to Artists North for many years.

She loved camping, fishing, gardening, dancing, music, swimming, and collecting art supplies.

Janet will be sadly missed by her eldest son Jim of Richmond Hill, ON; youngest son Ben; cherished grandchildren: Cale Roy, Bryston Roy, and Mikenna Pastion of Richmond, BC; her precious sister Orma-Jean (Bob) Shmyruk with their 3 children: Tony, Corrine and Bonnie and their families; in-laws: Ray (Pam) Roy, Carmen (Harry) Mack, June Turner, and George Roy; her dear friends and neighbours; and many cherished cousins from the Halvorson and Coristine families.

She was predeceased by her husband Phil in November 2015; mother Vera Halvorson; father Herman Halvorson; and her in-laws Rose Roy and Louis Roy.

At Janet’s request, a private family celebration of her life will be held, with interment at the Grande Prairie City Cemetery.

Thank you to Dr. Cor van Tonder in Sexsmith, Dr. Petra Grendarova at the Grande Prairie Cancer Centre, Dr. Iris Green-Starr, along with the dedicated staff at the QEII Hospital, and Dr. Daniel Stollery at the University of Alberta Hospital for her wonderful care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta (#144, 5241 Calgary Trail NW, Edmonton, AB, T6H 5G8).

Janet came into my life about 20 years ago as a business associate and we quickly became friends. What used to be weekly talks became monthly and then yearly. Her Christmas peanut brittle-truly the best in the world! And I will miss you my friend.
