Obituary For Jennie Ruptash Slette

Jennie Slette, resident of Beaverlodge, formerly of La Glace, AB, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at the Beaverlodge Municipal Hospital, at the age of 93 years.

Jennie was born November 25, 1924 in Soda Lake, AB, and grew up in Hairy Hill. Jennie attended Normal School for teacher training in Edmonton, following in her sister, Vera’s, footsteps. Her teaching career started in a one room school at Odin, near La Glace, in 1943. Her future husband, George, had just finished at Odin the year before.

They were married July 5, 1947 at the home of Floyd and Stella Gilkyson. Jennie put her career on hold to become a farmer’s wife, and returned to teaching once her children were in high school. Life on the farm included a passion for flowers, gardening, and many adventures picking berries, especially blueberries.

Jennie decorated her own wedding cake, starting a hobby spanning several years and hundreds of cakes for weddings, anniversaries, or children’s birthdays. She was a talented seamstress and needle worker, including cross-stitching, crocheting, and knitting. She also mentored 4-H classes in Valhalla and La Glace for several years.

She will be sadly missed by her husband George of 70 years; children: Cary (Linda Wilkins), Geneanne Shigematsu, and Eugene (Ruth); grandchildren: Brent (Mandie) Slette and their children Ashton and Kale; Trevor Hansen (Alexandra Winn) and their children Arianna and Carter; Jeffrey (Mary) Shigematsu and their children Mariko and Yuji; Jacalyn (Kenton) Schultz and their children Alexis, Zoey, and Maggie; Clint (Jennifer) Slette and son Gunnar; and Jason Slette. She is also survived by two half-brothers: Willis and Paul Kachuk and families of Edmonton.

She was predeceased by her parents Sanda and Nick Ruptash; brothers John, Eli, Tony, Harry, and Nick; sisters Mary and Vera; in-laws Gus and Inga Slette; sisters in-law Ingrid Goodie, Ida, and Clara; and son in-law Tom Shigematsu.

The family wants to thank Dr. Robert Crowe and the Staff from Beaverlodge Municipal Hospital for her wonderful care.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 2:00pm, at Calvary Lutheran Church in La Glace, AB.

Memorial donations may be made to Beaverlodge Hospital Foundation (Box 480, Beaverlodge, AB, T0H 0C0), or to Calvary Lutheran Church (PO Box 204, La Glace, AB, T0H 2J0).
